MARK → Read as if it’s your only source of info about Jesus, first you have heard of Jesus. → what sticks out to you? → words, phrases, events → what surprises or moves you? → identify who it is written for → identify what audience or community the text is trying to create or cater to Chap 1: - What did Baptism mean to the people of this time? Did they know what the Holy Spirit was? - Why was John arrested? Why does it not go more into this? - It seems like it was written to convince people to follow Jesus. It informs of the good things he is doing, and kind of appeals to someone, to make them want to know more - Even the demons knew him - Jesus is definitely portrayed as someone who can heal all, do all, be all. - Jesus became somewhat of a celebrity … when he cured the man of leprosy, he asked him to be silent about it, but the man spread the word. Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, so he had to stay in the country. Even then, people from all over came to him. Chap 2: - 2:8 - ‘perceived in his spirit’ did Jesus have the ability to read minds as one would think God to? - Talk about the rules of fasting apply to the people of that time Chap 3: - It is intriguing that the Pharisees were just waiting for Jesus to do something that would lead to his downfall … why is it such a problem that Jesus heals someone on the Sabbath if that day is for he and his father?? Chap 4: - Why does everything come in parables for the ones ‘on the outside’? - When Jesus calms the wind and sea, the disciples really start to question who he is and how he does the things he does.
