Marking criteria: Individual speaking (Langblog)

For the individual speaking tasks, you will be marked using the following criteria:

Individual speaking task Task achievement, comprehensibility and pronunciation Task achievement, comprehensibility and pronunciation take into account how well the finished work answers the task requirements, how comprehensible the speaker is, and the speaker’s pronunciation and intonation. Fluency and coherence Fluency and coherence take into account how natural speaker sounds and hesitation. It also includes the use of linking words and other linguistic devices to connect ideas (e.g. pronouns) to help the listener understand the speaker. Language: Grammar and vocabulary Grammar and vocabulary takes into account the variety and accuracy of grammatical structures and vocabulary the speaker uses.

Marking criteria: Individual speaking (Langblog)

Task achievement, comprehensibility and pronunciation ● Very good completion of task with no significant omissions and few irrelevancies ● Very easy to understand ● Pronunciation and intonation always very clear and natural and these are used to emphasise meaning and attitude

Fluency and coherence

Language: Grammar and vocabulary

● Communicates spontaneously and naturally ● Occasional hesitation to search for expressions ● Uses a variety of cohesive devices efficiently and accurately to connect ideas

● Accurate use and wide variety of basic grammatical structures and vocabulary ● Some complex grammatical structures used successfully ● Use of synonyms to avoid repetition ● Occasional minor errors

7, 8 B

● Good completion of task with minor omissions ● Almost always easy to understand ● Pronunciation and intonation generally clear and natural and although there may be some errors, the meaning is clear

● Produces long stretches of speech which are clear ● Occasional hesitation to search for patterns and expressions with a few noticeably long pauses ● Uses some cohesive devices to link and connect ideas

● Good use and variety of basic grammatical structures ● Some complex grammatical structures used but not always successfully ● Some use of synonyms but some repetition

5, 6 C+

● Adequate completion of task but there may be some irrelevant information ● Generally easy to understand ● Pronunciation and intonation noticeably influenced by first language, don’t always sound natural and sometimes affect comprehension

● Produces quite long stretches of continuous speech ● Frequent long pauses ● Adequate use of some cohesive devices to link ideas

● Adequate use of grammatical structures and vocabulary to complete the task ● May use complex grammatical structures but errors make the speaker difficult to understand at times ● Adequate range of vocabulary but some repetition and basic errors

3, 4 C-

● Inadequate completion of task with significant parts not included in terms of content and/or irrelevant information ● Difficult to understand ● Pronunciation and intonation strongly influenced by first language, don’t sound natural, generally impeding comprehension

● Produces some short sentences ● Very noticeable hesitation ● Links groups of words only with simple linking words such as “and”, “but” and “because”

● Frequent basic grammatical errors which make speaker difficult to understand ● Minimal vocabulary to complete the task and major errors make speaker generally difficult to understand

0, 1, 2 D

● Inadequate completion of task ● Almost always impossible to understand ● Inaccuracies in pronunciation and intonation make speaker incomprehensible

● Very short, isolated words and expressions ● Very long pauses to search for expressions ● No use of linking expressions

● Insufficient vocabulary and grammatical structures to complete the task
