Examining how dynamics of capitalism operated at a global level. Believed that the capitalist core only survived by exploiting the agricultural periphery. (Gunder Frank; Wallerstein)
Focus on regions rather than states. Exploitative.
Development Historical, Progressive. Results from periodic crises when the FoP outgrow their historical circumstances. In context of capitalism, crises of overproduction, lead to consolidation of classes, and eventual proletariat revolution against ruling class. To avert crises, capitalism creates need/want. Searches for new markets. Brings ‘less developed’ markets into capitalist system. Zero-Sum. Development in North, only achieved through underdevelopment in South....
