Master's Level Comprehensive Examination Procedures Purpose of a Comprehensive Exam The Comprehensive Exam serves as a demonstration of mastery of a body of knowledge of CACREP's core areas of counseling. All master's degree students must take a comprehensive examination before receiving their master's degree. Schools and programs are required to meet specific academic standards for accreditation. Students must demonstrate some level of competency in understanding the material cognitively. The Comprehensive exam used in the University of the Cumberland’s Masters programs is the Counselor Education Comprehensive Exam (CECE). Scheduling the CECE The Counselor Education Comprehensive Exam (CECE) will be offered during the Internship II course. Once a student is enrolled in the Internship II course, they can access instructions for the CECE exam via the course’s Blackboard page in the folder titled “Counselor Education Comprehensive Exam”. The folder also includes instructions on the Respondus Monitor (a platform students are required to use to proctor the exam). Passing the CECE is a requirement to pass the Internship II course. Students can take the CECE exam three times during the course. The first attempt is during weeks 3 and 4, the 2nd attempt during weeks 8 and 9 and the third during weeks 13 and 14. The exam will open on Monday of the first week and close at midnight EST on Sunday of the 2nd week. You may take it at any time during that time frame. Students are required to take the exam during weeks 3 and 4. Passing the exam is a requirement for the course. How to Prepare for the CECE It is recommended that students begin studying for the CECE during their Internship 1 course. Study material may be available through several commercial examination preparation companies, including: - National Board for Certified Counselors: https://www.nbcc.org/exams/examprep / - NCE Exam: nationalcounselingexam.com - Encyclopedia of Counseling and Howard Rosenthal: http://www.howardrosenthal.com/bestncecpce-exam-prep-kit/ Read through ALL material in the folder in the Internship II course entitled “Counselor Education Comprehensive Exam (CECE)” which will have instructions on taking the exam. Ensure that you have read the instructions for the exam as well as the Respondus Monitor instructions prior to taking the exam.

Structure and Content of the CECE Much like the National Counselor Examination (NCE), the Comprehensive Exam consists of 120 multiple choice questions, covering the following core areas of counseling instruction:  Helping Relationships  Professional Orientation and Ethics  Career and Lifestyle Development  Appraisal  Research and Program Evaluation  Group Work  Human Growth and Development  Social and Cultural Foundations There is an equal amount of questions in each of the above areas. You will have exactly 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the exam. Once the test has been opened, the clock will begin. The exam will automatically submit the responses even if the student is not finished at the 3-hour mark. Results of the CECE You will automatically receive your results after taking the exam. You must correctly answer at a minimum 64 out of the 120 questions. If you successfully complete the exam, you will receive an email from the Department of Counseling within two weeks acknowledging this. If you do not pass the exam on your 1st or 2nd attempt, you will receive communication from the Department of Counseling within two weeks as to next steps including the next available dates as to taking the exam and a remediation form that is required to be completed prior to taking the next attempt. If you do not pass the exam on your 3rd attempt, you will not pass your Internship 2 class and you will be referred for remediation with the Department of Counseling. An individualized plan will be set up at that point and future actions can include taking relevant coursework, sitting out of the program for a period of time, or potential dismissal from the program. You will receive email communication as to this process within two weeks after your 3rd attempt.
