Calculator Steps to Find Inflection Points 1. Put the original function, f (x), into Y1 2. Find f ′ (x) by hand and put it into Y2 3. Put nDeriv(Y2 ,X,X) into Y3 (this is the second derivative) 4. Use either equation solver or the graph to solve f ′′ (x) = 0 (i.e. Y3 = 0) 5. Plug the answer from step (4) back into the original function, f (x) (i.e. find Y1 (answer), to get the y-coordinate of the inflection point.) It is important to follow the steps this way, as opposed to using nDeriv for finding both derivatives. As we found out in class, the calculator has a high chance of messing up for some reason when it is done like that, so it is best to stick to the above steps.
