Rounding
Round to the nearest 1/10th o pound for children and adults o kilogram for adults and children o mL if the amount to be given is ≥ (greater than or equal to) 1 mL for injections for adults and children o degree for C◦ or F◦ temperatures
Round to the nearest 1/100th o BSA for adults and children _____________________ BSA = √ weight (kg) x height (cm) 3600 o o
____________________ BSA = √weight (lb) x height (in) 3131
mL if amount to be given is < (less than) 1 mL for injections mL in a tuberculin syringe
Abbreviations
Do not use the following o “U” write out units o “hs” write out half-strength or at bedtime o “S.C.” or “S.Q.” write out subcut or subcutaneously o “D/C” write out discontinue or discharge o “cc” use mL o “QD” write out daily or “Q” write out as every Correct abbreviations for the following: o gram = g o Liter = L o milliliter = mL
Formulas to Memorize for Temperature Conversion ˚C to ˚F:
˚F = 1.8 (˚C) + 32
˚F to ˚C:
˚C = ˚F – 32 1.8
Intravenous Calculations
round to the nearest whole drop (gtt) round to the nearest whole milliliter (mL) gtt = gtt (drop factor) x amount of solution (mL) x 1 hour min mL number of hours 60 min gtt/min = mL x gtt/mL (drop factor) min
Conversions to Memorize
5 mL = 1 tsp 15 mL = 3 tsp = 1 tbs = 0.5 oz 30 mL = 6 tsp = 2 tbs = 1 oz 240 mL = 8 oz = 1 cup 500 mL = 1 pint 1000 mL = 1 quart = 1 L 1 kg = 1000 g 1 g = 1000 mg 1 mg = 1000 mcg 1 kg = 2.2 lb 1 lb = 16 oz 1 inch = 2.5 cm
