The Mayo Clinic on Adult ADHD: A Review

2 The Mayo Clinic on Adult ADHD: A Review Does ADHD affect an adult the same way that it affects a child? ADHD, which is a common neurological disorder that is commonly diagnosed in children can often affect a child into adulthood or go undiagnosed until later in life. The symptoms that come with ADHD can make living with it much harder as an adult tries to balance responsibilities in their work and personal life. With the help of internet pages, parents and caregivers can easily access information on ways to spot signs of ADHD along with how to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. The Mayo Clinic’s webpage: Adult Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has achieved this same level of support for people who are looking for information on this disorder and how it can affect them or a loved one as an adult. The Mayo Clinic has developed an easy-to-follow webpage that is accurate, objective, and current throughout. Just like information that we see on the news or hear on the radio we simply cannot believe everything that we read on the internet. The team at the Mayo Clinic worked together to compile the information on the webpage for Adult attention-deficit/ hyperactivity. The Team is comprised of medical staff, physicians, and scientists who dedicate their clinical time to updating the website (Mayo Clinic, 2019) and ensuring that the consumer has the most reliable up to date information. The webpage gives very specific advice on what some of the symptoms of ADHD in an adult can look like and when an individual should be concerned about the symptoms. In the section on symptoms and causes, the Mayo Clinic has listed a few conditions that co-exist in adults with ADHD which include substance abuse. While substance abuse and anxiety are common among the general population it is exponentially higher in adults with ADHD (Lundervold, Jensen & Havaak, 2020). The webpage includes a section for Diagnosis and treatment. This helps any person who may struggle to understand the disorder find a way to get

3 diagnosed and receive the help they may need to cope with the disorder. All the information posted is backed by a plethora of references that the Mayo Clinic has compiled and added onto their webpage to support all their information and suggestions. The Mayo Clinic does a very good job of keeping an objective stance on ADHD by acknowledging that there are many personal views and opinions when it comes to ADHD including what are the best interventions, treatment options, or medications to help people with ADHD. These opinions can easily become widespread and well-known without any clinical supports, thanks to the internet. The goal of the Mayo clinic is to inform the public of any diseases or illnesses and therefore are an unbiased party when providing this information to the public. Being a not-for-profit organization, the Mayo Clinic does not have any personal gain by providing this information; unlike a pharmaceutical company that produces medications for hyperactivity or a toy company that provides sensory tools for children in a classroom. By having this unbiased information, it allows the reader to form their own interpretation of the information and seek treatment options that would best suit their needs. The healthcare field is changing every day. When reviewing this website and any website it is important to check how current the information is (Lane, 2010). Scientific studies that once proved one thing are now proving the opposite thanks to advancing technology and studies with longer time frames. ADHD has historically been viewed as a product of poor parenting that is likely caused by too much screen time. We now know that ADHD is far more complex than this as well as behavioral and medical interventions that are potentially beneficial in managing the symptoms of ADHD. The benefit of the Mayo clinic site is its ability to constantly maintain accurate information about ADHD. For example, the oldest reference on this page is from 2013 and the entire webpage itself was last updated in June of 2019. This date ensures that the

4 information provided is extremely relevant. When individuals are seeking more information about a new diagnosis or trying to obtain information for their child, wondering if the information is relevant and up to date should not be a concern they have to worry about. The Mayo clinic keeps its information current so that parents and individuals can focus on obtaining the right information and where to seek supports if they need them. The Mayo Clinic’s webpage on Adult ADHD was prepared in a very organized and detailed fashion. This webpage leaves the reader with a wealth of knowledge and resources. The information was accurately prepared by a team of physicians who worked to ensure that all information stayed objective and up to date throughout all research. This website would be a wonderful resource for any individual who thinks they may be exhibiting signs of ADHD. Not only can they find where to start with getting an accurate diagnosis, but also how to receive assistance with learning to cope with living with this neurological disorder.
