MBA Major in Finance Finance majors will acquire the analytic and theoretical tools required to master practical issues in Finance, with applications to financial management in business firms, financial institutions, government, and not-for-profit entities. While attention is given to the descriptive, institutional, and historical aspects of the field, primary emphasis is placed on the analytical foundations of the discipline, emphasizing theory and methods of analysis and making extensive use of relevant techniques of economic analysis, mathematics, and statistics. Students wishing to major in Finance begin by taking the two Finance core classes, FNCE 611, Corporate Finance and FNCE 613, Macroeconomics and the Global Economic Environment, which provide an overview of the key role of finance in core business strategies and an understanding of the broad macro environment for business decisions. Beyond the required courses, students choose among many electives to structure a program of study to match their interests and career objectives. CORE COURSE REQUIREMENTS The major requires students to take or replace FNCE611 and FNCE613. Qualified students may replace FNCE 611 with either FNCE 720 Investment Management or FNCE 726 Advanced Corporate Finance and FNCE 613 with FNCE 893 Central Banks, Monetary Policy and Financial Markets. Thus, you can complete the major by either: 1.

Taking FNCE 613, replacing FNCE 611 with either FNCE 720 or FNCE 726 to fulfill the core requirement, and taking 4 c.u. of Finance electives to complete the (You may choose to take both FNCE 720 and FNCE 726 and use one to satisfy the core requirement and the other as an elective.) 2. Taking FNCE 611, replacing FNCE 613 with FNCE 893 to fulfill the core requirement, and taking 4 cu of Finance electives to complete the major.

You may choose a variety of different Finance electives to fit your specific intellectual and career objectives, but we urge that you resist the temptation to

become too specialized. The Finance Department believes you will be best served by broad exposure to a range of courses in Finance to prepare you for the dynamic environment in which you will be working. For this reason, we will reject proposals for Individualized Majors that suggest you have specialized in some field in Finance. This would rule out titles that include terms such as finance, financing, investment, investing, funding, buyouts, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, etc. If you wish to signal to prospective employers the depth or intensity of your interest in some subject in Finance, we suggest you highlight the key courses on your resume or provide a brief narrative to show how the courses you have selected provide you with special expertise. Please note that Courses taken for a Finance Major must be taken for a grade. Pass/fail courses will not be counted toward the major requirements. 2. No more than one credit unit may be an Independent Study Project (FNCE 899) or a Finance Department approved Global Modular Course. You may combine 5 cu from each category, but the total credited to your major requirement must not exceed 1 cu. 3. Courses offered in other departments cannot be counted towards the Finance major unless they have been cross listed with the Finance Department and bear a Finance Department course number.
