Measurement

Purpose: To acquaint with the simple measurements of distances, mass, volume, and density. To study experimental error. Introduction: Measurement is the assignment of a number to a characteristic of an object or event, which can be compared with other objects or events. Distance, also called length, is a fundamental concept in physical science. The millimeter is the smallest division on the meter stick and the main scale of the vernier caliper. Area is measured in the derived units square meter or square centimeter. Volume is obtained by multiplying the length by the width by the height in the same units. Mass is a measure of the quantity of how much volume of space it occupies. Mass is measured in grams or kilograms. Weight is the pull of gravity. Mass density is the number of grams of mass in each cubic centimeter of volume.

Theory: Density= Mass/Volume Vol= area* length

ExperimentApparatus: Meter stick, vernier caliper, triple beam balance, wooden block, metal cylinder, coin, wire.

Procedure: A. 1. Using the meter stick measure length of the laboratory table; the length, width, and depth of the wooden block and diameter of the cylinder. 2. Using the vernier caliper, measure the thickness and diameter of the coin, the length and diameter of the cylinder, the diameter of the wire, the depth and thickness of the block. B. 1. First I convert the average measurement of the wooden block into the three metric units. 2. Then I calculate the volume of the block I measured. 3. Then I calculate the density from the averaged measured values of the size and volume of the block.

Conclusion: By using correct apparatus we can easily determine the accurate measurement; find distance, mass, volume and density....
