Description

PSY-102 General Psychology Topic 1 – Introduction to Psychology and Role of Biology Mini Brain Project Directions: Conduct research on a selected brain area or structure. Areas and structures available for research include: frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, medulla, pons, cerebellum, reticular formation, thalamus, hypothalamus, limbic system, cerebrum, hippocampus, amygdala, corpus callosum, Broca’s area, OR Wernicke’s area. Conduct research using scholarly Internet sources, library sources, and the textbook. While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. Each question should be a minimum of 50 words. Part 1: Using your research thoroughly answer the questions below: 1. Where is the area or structure located? The Frontal lobe is located behind the forehead, under the frontal skull bones at the front of the brain. The frontal lobe is the last region of the brain to fully develop. The frontal lobe accounts for two thirds of the brains mass. The frontal lobe is part of the cerebral cortex. The frontal lobe is broken up into two sub lobes called the right and left frontal cortex. 2. What are its major functions? The frontal lobe is split into two halves. The left half of the lobe affects the muscles on the right side of the body. Whereas the right side of the lobe controls the muscles on the left side of the body. The primary functions of the frontal lobe include decision making, problem solving, and thought and attention. The frontal lobe contains the motor cortex which is responsible for the planning and coordination of movement. The Broca’s Area is located in the frontal lobe. The Broca’s Area deals with the production of language. The frontal lobe is also responsible for affecting mood, personality, and social and moral reasoning. 3. What techniques are used to view or measure it? A common way the frontal lobe is viewed is by MRI’s. An MRI uses radio waves and magnetic fields to produce images of the brain. Another common technique used to view the frontal lobe is the Electroencephalogram (EEG). An EEG uses electrodes that are attached to the scalp to view electrical activity in the brain. 4. What happens when it is damaged? The most famous case of brain damage to the frontal lobe comes from a railroad worker named Phineas Gage. After the incident Gage had become aggressive in his speech and the way he

acted. However, frontal lobe damage can cause common symptoms such as speech problems, poor coordination, personality changes such as in Gages case, and trouble with planning. 5. What other structures is it near? The frontal lobe is located at the front of the of the cerebrum. The Frontal lobe rests on the temporal lobe, it is in front of the parietal lobe, and it is apart from the occipital lobe. The formal lobe is also connected to the other lobes via the limbic lobe. The limbic lobe crosses the four lobes including the frontal lobe. 6. What other structures help or perform similar functions? The frontal lobe connects with the limbic system. The limbic system controls automatic and primitive functions. The limbic systems reactions are depended on emotions and a person’s experience. An emotional reaction to trauma can affect the limbic systems function. Memories that are stored in the frontal lobe can help strengthen the way the limbic system functions and reacts.

Part 2: Once you have answered the questions above, please select an activity below and complete it. • • • • •

Make a model of the brain emphasizing your structure using food or common – everyday – household items. Create a mnemonic device that will help classmates remember the most important information about your structure. Design a T-shirt with an illustration of structure and function. Compose a motto/bumper sticker your structure might adopt (include a logo to accompany the motto). Create a cartoon featuring your structure.

Insert Picture: A picture of the product created must be inserted below. The student must be included in the picture holding the final product or credit will not be awarded (Only instructor will be able to see the picture added).
