Homework #1

1. How does the DIAD help drivers deliver packages? The DIAD is the main tool that allows the driver to receive data on the dispatch plan. It shows how many packages and the location of the packages to the drivers. The DIAD provides the customized information needed for data and allows them to build relation ships with the customers. It also keeps the driver in contact with operations and updated the routes when needed. 2. What improvements were made in the DIAD V? Improvements for the DIAD V include a faster processing system, a better touchscreen for customers to sign. The size was also reduced to make it more mobile and hold packages at the same time increasing efficiency. The scanner was upgraded to pick up barcodes much quicker. Functionality wise it was the same as the DIAD but the upgraded features made it quicker to use since they did not have to learn a new system. 3. How many times are packages handled by humans once they reach Worldport? Why is this important? After reaching worldport the packages are handled by humans twice, at arrival and departure. This is important because the automated system is designed so that the packages do not touch each other and reduces the likelihood of damages which increases efficiency. 4. What are “end of runway” facilities? End of runway facilities are where UPS receive, pick, pack and ship goods for delivery the same day. 5. What kinds of information technologies do you see being used by UPS in this video? Information technologies shown in the videos are the DIAD, the automated package process system, the computer programs that assist the operations managers in designated routes and same day delivery for the fleets. Without this information UPS would not be leader in the industry. 6. Why doesn’t UPS use much more powerful and smaller smartphones like the iPhone or Android? An iphone or android would be more powerful and smaller than the DIAD but it would not be ideal because they would provide to many features and be less durable. The DIAD provides only the information that is believed to help with efficiency and the larger size makes it better suited to withstand the day to day activity/ weather of delivering packages. 7. How does UPS’s investment in IT help it achieve the strategic business objectives described in Chapter 1?

UPS’s investment in IT helps them increase efficiency and customer service by provide the right information and organization to their employees. This investment allows them to be ahead of competitors. 8. Why does UPS serve as an example of a “Digital firm” as described in Chapter 1? UPS is an example of a digital firm because almost every aspect of the operation is done digitally. Customers provide packages to be delivered and the packages are scanned into the system. The system tehn tracks the item while it proceeds through and automated handling system. Once the package reaches the distribution center they are scanned and packed into vehicles where the digital technology keeps records of the items position then provides the location to drop off the package. Customers then digitally sign for the package...
