Description

Ghostery Group Assignment Link: www.ghostery.com www.amazon.com When we typed and hit enter for Amazon sites on google, 3 trackers appeared. Then, we entered the actual Amazon website and 5 blocked trackers popped out. The name of the advertiser was Amazon Associates. The page took 4.68 seconds to load. www.buzzfeed.com When we went to the Buzzfeed page, the number of blocked trackers kept increasing until it reached 13. For this website, we were able to notice that the color of the page load - the small circle that appears on top of the page when you press on Ghostery- had different colors. It was mostly purple, but it also included orange, blue, and light blue. Each color indicated a type of blocked ad. For example: Color purple indicated advertising; 7 trackers were blocked from this site such as Outbrain Amplify, Quantcast, NetRatings SiteCensus, Sailthru Horizon, AppNexus, Permutive, and Google Publisher Tags. Color orange indicated essential ads and one tracker only: Scroll. Color blue indicated Site Analytics and 4 trackers (ScoreCard Research Bacon, Google Analytics, and Pinterest Conversion Tracker). Color light blue indicated social media and one tracker only: Facebook Connect. The page took 13.2 seconds to load. www.apple.com The third website we chose was Apple. It was surprising to find that no trackers were blocked for this company's website as it is on the list of 50 top websites for visitors.

We tried reloading the page and pressing different tabs on the same website but Ghostery was not able to find or block any trackers. The page took 2.72 seconds to load. www.Twitter.com The twitter page loaded at 3.46 seconds and there was only 1 tracker, google analytics, which was blocked. After refreshing the page, I noticed that the tracker went up to two, but it didn't identify who the second tracker was. Time inc or www.Meredith.com their page loaded around 3.91 seconds and the site analytics showed that there are two trackers but only one is blocked which is google analytics. The second tracker was MyFonts Counter. I thought since Time Inc is a large online news source/magazine, they’d have more ads and trackers. I did refresh the page to see if any more would surface, but it remained at 2 trackers. https://weather.com Right away, there were 41 trackers on the page after scrolling to the bottom and not clicking anything that number rose up to about 44 trackers. The majority of the trackers were advertising sites as well as marketing afflicted types of sites. Youtube.com YouTube was said to be one of the sites where you could be exposed to a lot of ads and clutter on your webpage. But when the site first loaded despite it taking a long time to load there were zero trackers on the home page. I then clicked on a video posted by a verified account, NBC World OF Dance called “The Kings Blow the Judges Away with "Tattad Tattad" - World of Dance 2019 (Full Performance)” that was one when tracker popped up, a doubleclick tracker. Yahoo.com Yahoo, didn't show me any trackers until i started clicking on tabs in their site. The Trackers went from zero to two by just clicking the news tab. On the news tab on of the trackers was an ad for Under Armor shoes, I clicked on the ad to see if that would have any impact on the trackers i was seeing on yahoo. It actually just from 20 to 25 trackers on www.underarmour.com/ but stayed two on yahoo.com. The trackers that popped up were Brightroll, Oath, and tumblr botton. www.facebook.com

On FaceBooks website no ad trackers popped up on the main sight or after clicking around on the site. In total there were no blocks on this website, which is something I am very shocked about. Facebook seems to be the site where consumers are often served the most digital advertising. This is something that would be interesting to look deeper into! www.linkedin.com On linked in the number of block trackers that popped up were four. The trackers that popped up were AppNexus, Cedexis Radar, LinkedIn Ads, and PowerLinks. The page took 3.02 seconds to load. www.pinterest.com While loading Pinterest 6 ad trackers popped up; Cedexis Radar (analytics) , DoubleClick Bid Manager (advertising), Facebook Connect (social), Google AdWords Conversion (advertising) , Google Dynamic Remarketing (advertising), Google Tag Manager (manager). These trackers were blocked and the page loaded in 4.25 second....
