Daralee James Dr. Jacqueline Heslop English 1100 R73 MLA Citation Assignment 31 Oct 2017 Citation: “Facebook in a Crowd”

1. Summary In the essay “Facebook in a Crowd”, by Hal Neidzviecki, the narrator shares his experience of loneliness where he invited 700 of his Facebook “friends” to a party with hopes of meeting new friends, resulting in the attendance of only one person; discouraged by his failed attempt at organizing a gathering, he places responsibility on an era consumed with dynamic and fast paced lives.

2. Paraphrase Hal Neidzviecki explains the way his online experience informed him on the true nature of how Facebook events invites are operationalized as he states ‘“definitely attending’ on Facebook means “maybe” and “maybe attending” means “likely not”’(MM114). Niedzviecki realizes that he probably should not take offence to the lack of attendance he received at his Facebook party. The amalgamation of liquor and desolation put Neidzviecki’s mental state in a frenzy, causing him to dwell on his sorrows and misfortunes. The author questioned whether he has an existential angst amongst his friends, but also alludes to the fact that it may just be that people don’t value face to face interaction in the current day. But after close consideration Neidzviecki uncovered that Facebook was not to blame since the virtual realities of friendship are no more qualitative than nullity. The dynamic realities of present day life cause a shortage of leisure time which conclusively creates a gloom of mundaneness on both old and new friendships. Neidzvieck had an epiphany where he realized that his lacking social life was not due to his disposition but rather due to the limited essence of time in everyone's modern day lives.

3. Quotation Additionally, Neidzvieck points out that virtual friends are valueless due to their nature and their inability to exceed the virtual world. Facebook does a great job at hosting a platform where an infinite high school reunion can take place. Where one touches basis with memories and friends of the past. But those friendships are only abstract because they do not extend beyond the scope of the virtual world, into the physical world. Neidzvieck proclaims his heartaches from friendlessness as he states, “seven hundred

friends, and I was drinking alone” (MM114), which goes to emphasize that the quantity of online friends does not manifest into true and meaningful physical relationships....
