I used to think communication was just the exchange of words verbally. Now I think communication is not only an assortment of ways to exchange words, but also a variety of additional things, such as how a message is received or how to differentiate between the type of message needed for each situation. Communication isn’t always verbalized but can be written or even expressed through body language. Rather than speaking in-person, people communicate through text, email, and mail. When conversing in-person or in a video chat, people need to be conscious of their body language as well as their tone. Alternatively, things to consider with communication is how a message is received. Often, putting yourself in the shoes of the receiver can assist with smoothing out a message for delivery. When delivering a message, you also need to consider what the intent of the message is to determine the right way to deliver a message. Some examples of types of messages include requesting information, delivering bad news, routine, or even persuasive messages. Overall, communication is a multifaceted thing that can’t be fully chalked up to just a verbal message. It entails different types of messages, different ways to be delivered, and even body language.
