12/12/17 MUEL1832– Original Listening Guide This is an individual assignment, do not work in groups: Submit this document in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format to the Dropbox on D2L (pages 2-3 are the worksheet that you will fill out). Selecting a piece: For your Original Listening Guide, you may select a piece from any genre, style or time period as long as a recording is readily available on Rhapsody or YouTube (and no, you may not select a song discussed in the textbook). Completing the worksheet: o Background information and questions: On the first page of your worksheet, you will provide background information about the piece and answer some questions about its basic structure. Always try to explain your rationale (this is monophonic because...). For your research:  Popular music is probably best researched in Google, and related search engines, although there are excellent resources available in the Music Library (in the Music Building, 3rd floor).  For Classical Music of the Western Tradition and Jazz, see Grove Music Online (database). As noted in the “Music Research Guide” on Chinook “Grove Music Online comprises the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, The Norton/Grove Dictionary of Women Composers, and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.”  For World Music, see The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online. These online resources are readily available in Chinook while using an internet connection on campus. To get access to these online resources off campus, be sure to use a VPN connection (see http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/research/offcampusaccess.htm). o Identify, describe, and discuss significant events in the piece: On the second page of your worksheet, you will identify at least 10 significant events in the piece by their timestamps, each of which you will describe and discuss in full sentences. Timestamps are written in minutes and seconds (M:SS) such as 0:35 or 3:42. Please write in complete sentences for each of your entries in this section.  These events may be changes in tempo or meter, changes in instrumentation and/or texture, mood shifts (such as a change from major to minor mode), the entrance of a soloist, appearance or recurrence of a motive, and so on.  Provide a brief discussion and/or description of each one. These should include terminology and concepts covered in the textbook chapters on rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, timbre, and form, as well as non-technical descriptions to make your ideas as clear as possible. Extra credit opportunity (optional): For maximum of 15 additional points, complete the worksheets a second time using another song. Once you have selected a second song, complete the worksheets as before with one exception: you do not have to include the two-paragraph discussion of the piece after your ten time stamps. Once finished, submit all the worksheets for both songs as ONE file. Finally, please resist the urge to plagiarize this portion of the assignment. Although it may seem like an intelligent idea to swap worksheets with another student, D2L’s originality check feature makes it very obvious when two or more students’ papers are related (and it’s extremely sensitive). Please, for your sake and ours, do not share your assignments with one another student. Any incident of academic misconduct on this assignment will result in all students involved receiving a zero on the entire assignment. Finally, please know that the assignments will initially appear to be out of 45 points. Once all the assignments are graded I will adjust the point total to 30 and your score will remain the same. For example, if you did well on the assignment and the extra credit your initial score will be 45/45. Once I adjust the point total your score will change to 45/30, reflecting your extra credit.

Is the piece in duple or triple meter? How would you describe the tempo of the piece?

This piece has a four-beat meter and I would describe the meter to be moderato throughout and then faster (accelerando) at certain points of the piece. When I researched the song the sheet music said a tempo of 92 bpms at the beginning and then during the chorus it would say 126 bpms implying accelerando.

Is the piece in major or The song is in a Bb Major minor mode? How do you mode. When I was listening to the music, it sounded know? more happy and upbeat and the lyrics evoke encouragement so I concluded it was in a major mode and then I confirmed my conclusion when I researched the sheet music and found it was in Bb Major mode.

If this is a song, does the same melody repeat with different words? If yes, write down the timestamps for the beginning of each repeat.

There are only two verses in this song and the second verse is at 1:59.

Written Section: How do you know this performer, composer, and/or band? Were you familiar with this piece of music before beginning this assignment? What is the style of music most associated with this performing group? Did the piece of music you chose fit in or break with that style? Is the style of this piece well-known or popular amongst people your age? Why or why not? What function do you think this piece of much (and the performing force behind it) has in our society? Do you think critical listening of the type used to complete this assignment will change the way you listen to music in general? Please write 2 paragraphs minimum.

The first time I heard the song The General by Dispatch was in the 7th grade at my friend’s house. We were laying on a blanket in the grass on her front yard and she played it for me because her older brother was learning to play it on the guitar. I never had heard of Dispatch before but was immediately intrigued by the guitar intro in The General with its fast tempo and complex disjunct melody. Dispatch has a very unique Rock sound, touching on a variety of styles including Jam Rock, Roots Rock, Acoustic Pop, Folk Rock and reggae influences. The style of music I would say is most associated with this music group would be Roots Rock. Roots Rock is rock that focuses on its origins in folk, blues, and country music. This style was the beginning of hybrid subgenres like Roots Reggae Rock. But, The General fits more within the style of Jam Rock with reggae influences throughout. Jam Rock is known for having long musical improvisations and long sets of music that can cross genres. Examples of popular Jam bands include the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band. I would consider this style of music to be popular amongst people my age but not as popular as more mainstream styles like Rap, Pop, and EDM. Within the Rock genre though, I would say that this type of Jam rock style is definitely the most popular among people my age because of its reggae influence. But considering the Band formed in 1996, it’s evident that this style was and still most popular among people in the generation above mine who experienced the birth of their unique style of music. This musical piece, The General, is and anti-war song about a General who comes to the realization that his soldiers shouldn’t be fighting and instead be out in the world fulfilling their dreams and living their life. He then tells them to go home and that its okay to leave even though he stays behind to fight because he wants them to go live their lives. According to interviews with Chad Urmston, the song mostly references the civil war and the general in the song is Robert E Lee during the Gulf-war. He also notes that despite the song referencing these specific wars, the song pertains and is relevant to any times of trials and tribulations. Today, our society has experienced numbers of issues and times of distress ranging from sexual misconduct in the workforce to natural disasters like the fires currently in Southern California. Having a song like The General is important during times of trouble because it evokes encouragement and hope while also spreading the word and promoting world peace. Therefore, I believe this musical piece, The General, plays an important role in our society and serves a beneficial function within it.
