Chapter 12 homework:South America and Mexico To what extent do each of the musics in this chapter reflect pre-Columbian, European, or African musical traits? a. “Evidence of siku and other types of flutes dates to pre-Columbian times.” Tango music includes a German-invented instrument, the bandoneón in its performances. Samba music has characteristics that are “primarily drawn from African ingredients.” Mariachi has heavy use of European musical characteristics. How does siku performance reflect community cohesion among Andean populations? a. “One siku is not typically capable of playing all the notes of a scale. Rather, a second siku must complement it. The two performers use an interlocking technique to produce the entire melody.” Just as the two performers come together to create one melody, the communities of the Andean population come together to create a cohesive whole with influences coming from each other. How does tango music reflect the essence of tango dance? a. The music and dance are both filled with passion. They are both meant to tell a story of love. Is capoeira a dance or martial art? Why might it be considered both? a. The definition in the book defines it as “a dance that developed from a style of martial arts.” It may be considered both because the dance is intertwined with martial arts during a performance. How does mariachi affirm or challenge American stereotypes of Mexican culture? a. I think that mariachi is usually thought of to be about love and played for celebrations mainly, but in reality, the songs can be about anything from work to religious context (which is more rare.) How is the survival of indigenous music and culture related to the challenges of modernization and environmental degradation? a. The modernization and environmental degradation both negatively affect the indigenous music and culture. With the things taking place, the indigenous people may feel less in-tune with their culture and may begin to learn less about it and the music because of the modern ways that are beginning to take place around them....
