MWL101 – RESEARCH SKILLS

Finding news and academic journal articles for your assignment For this assignment, you are required to find a minimum of 5-6 references in the form of news articles and academic journal articles. Finding newspaper articles using NewsBank 1. Go to the Deakin University library website – http://www.deakin.edu.au/library 2. Click on the Deakin College tile. This is very important because this will show you what resources you can access.

3. Click on Online content. This will show you what databases you can access as a Deakin College student.

4. Scroll down the list of e-resources until you get to Newspaper articles. Click on Newsbank. On the next page, click on Newsbank to access the database.

5. On the homepage, click on NewsBank Newspapers – Australia and the World.

6. Below is an example search. Take note of the fields – your keywords should always go under ‘All Text’ which can be selected from the dropdown menu. You can limit the date of the articles by selecting the ‘Date(s)’ field. You can add and remove rows using the buttons on the right-hand side. To understand how to construct an effective search, visit this page http://www.deakin.edu.au/library/help/library-search-tips

7. After you have completed your search, simply click on the title of an article to read it in full.

Finding academic journal articles using EBSCO 1. Follow steps 1-3 above. 2. Scroll down the list of e-resources until you get to General databases for all subject areas. Click on EBSCO selected databases. Once you have done this, you will be directed to a page that provides information on the various databases accessible via EBSCO. Click on the link to EBSCO selected databases again, to access all databases.

3. This page automatically selects all the databases in EBSCOhost. You can choose to untick certain databases if you wish, but it is recommended to click Continue for a more thorough search.

4. On most databases, you can choose to conduct a simple search or a more advanced search. Click on Advanced Search to see what this looks like.

5. Below is another example search. This search tells the database to search for three keywords – banking (OR finance, because these words can sometimes be synonymous), jobs (OR employment OR careers) and trends (OR industry). You may find it useful to consult the searching techniques page here to understand why the search has been constructed in this way http://www.deakin.edu.au/library/help/library-search-tips

6. Once you click search, you will see that this search has produced over 30,000 results. One good way to narrow down your search is to change the date range of the articles. Your assignment asks you to find academic articles and recommends to use ones that have been published in the last 24 months. The diagram below shows you how to select scholarly or peer-reviewed sources and how to change the publication date of the articles displayed.
