NATURAL LAW REFLECTION

So we need to create secondary precepts which can actually guide our day-to-day behaviour. However, humans are free and hence need guidance to find the right path. For Aquinas everything has a function and the good things to do are those acts that fulfil that function. God’s commands through the Divine Law are ways of illuminating what is in fact morally acceptable and not what determines what is morally acceptable. That right path is found through reasoning and generates the “internal” Natural Law. However, the primary precepts that derive from the Natural Law are quite general, such as, pursue good and shun evil. But we are fallible so sometimes we get these secondary precepts wrong, sometimes we get them right. When they are right they reflect our real goods. We need some revealed guidance and this comes in the form of Divine Law. So we need to create secondary precepts which can . When examined closely it is found that the natural law contains the precept of all law and, is at odds with certain laws that exist today, specifically abortion. This is very contrary to popular belief that right and wrong are relative; however, the idea of an absolute right makes sense. Thomas Aquinas called this innate sense the natural law. The “natural law is appointed by reason” and given to everyone. In every man there is an innate sense of right and wrong buried within him. The natural law is established by God in order to make men more virtuous....
