CONSERVATION The protection, preservation, management, or restoration of natural environments and the ecological communities that inhabit them.

Conservation generally include[s] the management of human use of natural resources for current public benefit and sustainable social & economic use.

Biodiversity Conservation

Conservation only makes sense if biodiversity has value (if it is *worth* saving) What is the value of biodiversity? … of Nature? 13

13

Value of Nature, of Biodiversity Intrinsic Values (internal ‘worth’)

Extrinsic Values (external ‘worth’; value to others)

Extrinsic)Values) can)be)further) divided)into)specific) types of)values)… 14

Intrinsic Values

Extrinsic Values

= Ethical Value:

Aesthetic Value:

Value of an entity unto itself, regardless of its value to humans

Value in making the world more beautiful/pleasant

= The right to exist simply because it’s there

Ex: ‘beautiful’ species/scenery; other sensory enjoyment (scent)

Emotional Value: Value beyond sensory enjoyment Ex: many people develop strong emotional bonds to certain natural areas or species (“sense of place”)

Economic/Utilitarian Value:

Ecological/Environmental Value: (Ecosystem Services)

Direct value as a tangible product that can be used, bought, or sold

Value in providing intangible services that allow humans and other life to exist

Ex: food, lumber, energy

Ex: plants help purify air and produce oxygen, soil microbes purify water, etc.
