Mandatory Skills Demonstrations Note: Labs may be on-campus or virtual/online. Students are required to pick up lab kits as arranged by George Brown College.
Mandatory Skills will be assessed and evaluated in lab (or recorded) demonstrations, arranged with Faculty and Nursing Lab Specialists. Students should complete a review of the content and attend on-campus and/or virtual labs for demonstrations and practice (during virtual and on-campus labs and on their own). Demonstration of competency in performing the mandatory skills is a course requirement and has a value of pass/no pass. Failure to successfully demonstrate competency in these skills would lead to being unsuccessful in passing the course.
Students must successfully complete their mandatory skills demonstrations no later than 2 weeks after the skill is taught. Due dates will be posted. Students will demonstrate skills during lab time or by submitting video demonstrations on Flipgrid® for evaluation and feedback. If unsuccessful on the first attempt, students will be given the option to re-submit on Flipgrid® or meet with the professor or NLS for a live evaluation. Demonstration of the mandatory skills are: 1. Hand hygiene 2. Donning and doffing PPE 3. Transfer to wheelchair 4. Pericare 5. Occupied bedmaking 6. Feeding a client with dysphagia Students will be given the option of completing mandatory skills during on campus labs or by submitting video demonstration on Flipgrid®. Due dates will be posted.
Lab Participation Skills will be demonstrated by faculty or nursing lab specialist during on-campus/virtual labs and may be by pre-recorded video. A student must participate in 80% of the scheduled labs to be successful in the course. Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of the lab. Students will be required to have a camera on their device for observation of practice during virtual/online lab. Note: Should access to simulation labs be unavailable, this process may change and students will be notified in Blackboard and in virtual class. Students will be required to attend virtual lectures and labs and submit video demonstrations for mandatory skills . Students will need to have a camera on their device for lectures, and virtual labs.
