Description of Skill Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis exposing the end of the penis. Usually performed within the first few days of life.

Indications -Patient must be a boy. -Parents will be able to choose whether or not they would like the baby to go through the procedure.

Outcomes/Evaluation -Forskin of the penis will be removed and the glans of the penis will be exposed. -Patient will have an easier time with hygiene. -Decreased risk of STI's -Decreased risk of penile cancer and cervical cancer in female partners.

Potential Complications -Hemorrhage -Infection -Imflammation or stenosis of the urinary meatus -Urethral fistula -Adhesions or dehiscience of the skin -Concealed penis

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) -Assess the newborn for family history of bleeding tendencies, Hypospadias, Ambiguous genitalia, and potential illness or infection. -Obtain informed consent from parents -Gather and prepare supplies -Administer medication as prescribed -Assist with procedure.

Client Education -Newborn cannot be bottle fed for 2 to 3 hours after procedure to prevent vomiting/aspiration. -Keep area clean, change diaper every 4 hr. -Avoid wrapping penis tight in gauze -Do not give tub bath until healed, trickle warm water over penis for cleaning. -Notify provider if signs of redness, swelling, discharge, odor, tenderness, decreased urination. -A yellowish film of mucus may form, do not remove. -Avoid premoistened towelettes, they contain alcohol. -Should heal completely within a couple weeks.

Nursing Interventions -Remove newbborn from restraining board and provide comfort. -Monitor for bleeding and voiding. -Apply gauze for bleeding or oozing. -Fan-fold diapers to prevent pressure on circumcised area -Admiister Liquid acetaminophen post procedure -Provide discharge instructions to parents....
