Description

Operation Management

Supply chain management in healthcare can be defined as the regulation of the flow of medical goods and services from manufacturer to patient. Additionally, it can also be viewed as sequences of steps it takes to obtain resources, track and manage supplies, and deliver goods and services to the final consumer (Sampson, 2016). Those who are involved in supply chain management in the healthcare industry are usually doctors, insurance companies, hospitals, regulatory agencies and other healthcare professionals. Effective management of the supply chain can improve costs through cost transparency. When organizations make costs of needed supplies transparent by detailing price data and utilization data, they can better organize their inventory which can in turn allow them to track and manage their resources more efficiently. This will allow them to effectively reconstruct their budget (if needed) which will allow overseers to be cost-efficient when it comes to supply chain management. In terms of improving quality of life for a patient, effective management of the supply chain can achieve this by improving patient safety. When organizations adopt global data standards and upgrade supply-chain processes, this can lead to establishing efficient inventory which improves supply. Additionally, this will result in successfully addressing the demand of consumers for products and also reduce the spread of counterfeit products in the gray or black markets. Limiting counterfeit products from being obtained by patients helps improve patient safety which thus improves quality of life. When organizations establish a consistent inventory of drug products, this will reduce the need for patients to obtain their medications elsewhere leading to improved access to those medications. In lesser developed countries, sometimes patients have to travel to further developed countries to obtain medication that they need that isn’t available in their domestic nation. Similarly, in America, sometimes patients have to travel from state to state just to obtain treatment or medication not available in their home state. This may be remedied when Organizations make known the availability of their products ahead of time and work to address inadequacies beforehand. In healthcare, incorporation of novel technologies as well as innovative changes are required for organizations to keep up with the changing climate. Technology can be of great help in helping physicians and medical staff perform their duties effectively. Since physicians and members of the medical staff are participants in supply chain management, technology can change the supply chain landscape by improving products and services administered to patients. Supply chain technology can provide patients with improved access to care through utilization of novel techniques or electronic devices. Advanced technology can also help to combat developing diseases. Value Stream mapping helps organizations conceptualize the steps necessary to take in order to effectively deliver high quality products to their consumers starting from a products formation and ending with delivery of product to the consumer. This process helps organizations to understand what the things are that can be done to improve manufacturing processes and eliminate waste. It can help to identify the various factors that go into the supply chain and help

address wastes that can be eliminated. Also, value stream mapping can help to develop methods that can be used to improve inventory supply. RevCycleIntelligence. (2016, April 15).
