WHY SHOULD YOU BECOME AN ORGAN DONOR?

Leonarda Gisone Public Speaking 1000C Speech 4: Persuasive Speech Dr. Flora Keshishian March 31, 2017 General Purpose: To Persuade Proposition: To persuade a group of people to become organ donors considering the constantly growing need for organs and tissues. Introduction: Imagine facing a life or death situation. You are in desperate need of something, but you are unable to obtain what you need to continue functioning or living all together. This is what it’s like for someone who is on the wait list for an organ donation. Today, I’m going to persuade you guys to become organ donors considering the constantly growing need for organs and tissues.

Body: I.

Background/Facts: A. Today, the need for organ donors is constantly increasing. 1. 22 people die every day while waiting for a transplant ([ CITATION NFT17 \l 1033 ]. B. Every day, there are about 77 people who receive at least ONE organ transplant, but because some people can’t wait too long for their organ transplant about 19 people die each day. 1. 1 organ donor can save 8 lives and change the lives of more than 50 people [ CITATION NFT17 \l 1033 ] a. Anyone can be an organ donor. C. There are more than 100,000 people waiting for some type of organ transplant and only about 10,000 of them are able to receive the life-saving transplant.

What is organ donation? A. There are different types of organ donations, Living donation, Deceased donation, and Vascularized Composite Allografts [ CITATION Gui17 \l 1033 ]. 1. One type is a Living donation:

a. Living donations including Kidney and Liver transplants b. A better alternative for kidney and liver patients who are waiting to receive a transplant because they can receive the best quality organ much sooner c. A better alternative for kidney and liver patients who are waiting to receive a transplant because they can receive the best quality organ much sooner d. Usually wait less than a year for their transplant 2. Another type is Deceased Donation. a. This type includes deceased organ, eye or tissue donation and it happens right after the death of the donor. b. So basically, at the end of your life you are able to give to others. 3. The last type is Vascularized Composite. a. Allografts has to do with the transplantation of skin, bone, muscles, blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. This is most commonly associated with hand and face transplants. III.

Why should you become an organ donor? A. The need for organ donors is constantly increasing and you could help. 1. According to organdonor.gov, one donor can possibly save as many as 8 lives. a. One organ donor and tissue donor is also able to save over 100 lives (donoralliance.org) B. Obviously, you wouldn’t be donating your vital organs while you are still living, the actual procedures would be carried out after doctors have made sure the patient is officially dead. C. Most religions also support organ and tissue donations as it’s seen as an act of charity and neighborly love. 1. Being an organ donor has the ability to comfort grieving families. D. The power to save lives in itself should be enough to become an organ donor. It is free to register to become an organ donor and it can be seen as a charitable act.

E. Although it’s hard to deal with the loss of a loved one, knowing that their loved one was able to save or improve the lives of others is always very comforting. IV.

How do you become an organ donor? [ CITATION New17 \l 1033 ] A. First, you must decide if this is what is right for you. Of course, this is a personal decision that will take some time to make. B. There are two ways you will be able to register 1. One way to register is online, which is quick a. Registration is free. 2. You can also register in person at your local motor vehicle department a. Registration is free C. All that is needed is identification information and a driver’s license or photo ID number D. If this is something you are willing to do, be sure to let your friends and family know you have registered, as this will allow for them to show their support.

Conclusion: Today, I was able to tell you about the need for organ donors in the United States, how this would benefit both you, your family, and the recipient, and how you’ll be able to become an organ donor. It is very simple to become an organ donor, but the decision to become one is ultimately yours in the end. Just as Michael Jordan said: "Please make the decision to become an organ and tissue donor. Remember: Share your life. Share your decision."
