Description

BIOL 1351 General Biology Organic Molecules Lab Organic macromolecules are the molecules that make up our bodies. We can use different chemicals to test for these organic molecules. The molecules are carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. You will use a virtual lab to test for these molecules. Go to the following website: http://faculty.kirkwood.edu/apeterk/learningobjects/biologylabs.htm Scroll down to the bottom. Choose the Carbohydrate tab. Click on “Test for Sugars” button and choose “Test for Sugars” from the dropdown menu. In the table you will enter the color of the tubes after you add Benedicts Reagent and then enter the color after you press the Hot Water Bath. Why was water used in all experiments? a. Water is used in all experiment as a control group. It does not contain any chemicals or minerals that alters the experiment result.

2.

Why did you need to record the color after Benedicts but before the hot water bath? a. Some items reacts to Benedicts and causes change in color so we need to record the color after Benedicts.

3.

Which of the solutions were sugars?

4.

Why was the potato negative for sugar? a. Because potato doesn’t contain sugar.

5.

Why would diet sprite be a negative test for starch when it changed from white to yellow? a. It would be a negative test because diet spirit doesn’t contain any starch in it.

6.

Why did potato test positive for starch but not for sugar? (What type of saccharide is sugar and what type of a saccharide is potato)

a. Potato is positive for starch because potato is a rich in starch but potato doesn’t contain enough of sugar in it to change the color and produce positive result. 7.

What solutions were positive for proteins? a. Egg white and Chicken soup

8.

What solutions were positive for lipids? a. Cream, Coconut, and Margarine

9.

Why do you think egg white had no lipids in it? a. Egg white lipids are present in the form of protein....
