INTRODUCTION

The Internship is a 2013 American comedy film directed by Shawn Levy. This movie was written by Vince Vaughn and Jared Stern, produced by Vaughn and Levy and starred by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. So, the story is about Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) that find out themselves been fired, then they decide to work at Google and became newly laid-off salesmen who compete against much younger and more technically proficient applicants. Fortunately, both of them are able to get internships in the fraud way at the Internet behemoth and head out to Silicon Valley right away. The majority of their other interns look down on Billy and Nick, so both of them partner up with the rest of the misfit "Nooglers" (new employees at Google) to make it through a series of competitive team challenges.

When the teams are tasked with developing an app, they get inspired by Lyle's drunken antics to create an app that prevents risky phone usage while drunk, and win the task by earning the most downloads. While the teams prepare to staff the technical support hotline, Billy didn't log his calls for review that lead the team loses. In the final task, which is a sales challenge, teams must sign the largest potential corporation to begin advertising with Google. Billy leads the team to show a local pizzeria owner how Google may help him communicate with potential consumers and so increase his business, while remaining true to his professional values. When Billy, Nick, and their team arrive to give a dynamic presentation about their new client, the head of the internship program, Chetty, recognizes that the potential of pizzeria business is boundless because it is expanding through technology. Nick and Billy's team win the challenge and the guaranteed jobs.

FOUNDATION OF TEAM DYNAMICS

3.1

TYPE OF TEAM

a) The type of team found in this movie is Task Forces since the aim of this internship event is to let the members compete against other teams in various tasks such as create an application and other challenges such as coding, answering helpline calls, locating bugs and much more.

b) In addition, all tasks assigned by Google Company to be completed are in a short period of time only. For example, they need to find inspiration to design a new Application that does not yet exist. In order to find an idea to create an app, they spent time in a nightclub and suddenly they got an interesting idea. As a result, they decided to create an app for drunken people to keep away from the reckless use of the phone.

c) Last but not least, this group is temporary type because all existing groups which has been established will be dissolved when all the tasks and challenges are completed. This is because, members who successfully complete all obstacles and the tasks will be given permanent jobs at Google Company.

3.2

REFERENCE OF SCENES

a) The scenes are at 0:31:22 minutes show that Billy and Nick found a competitive internship program and participated in interviews to get a decision on whether they were eligible or not. Fortunately, they were accepted for temporary to follow the Internship summer program at Google headquarters and has been assigned with various tasks.

b) The scenes are at 0:80:09 minutes show that they have gained victory for their efforts because the application that they created for drunk people has gained a lot of response and users.

c) The scenes are at 1:13:39 minutes. The group of Lyle, Nick, Billy, Neha, Stuart, Yo-Yo Santos and announced that they were accepted to work permanently as Google members because they had managed to convince a Pizza shop owner to work with them.

CHALLANGES OF TEAM

PROCESS LOSSES

This is where Process loss occurs. An example can be seen in the 00:38:35 minute when Lyle, who works as the group manager, chose 5 interns to be part of the team despite having hesitant and doubts about the ability of these new members. The Internship members consisted of Billy, Nick, Neha, Stuart and Yo-Yo Santos. The loss of process in the film also occurs because all of these new team members use more time and effort to find ways to work well with other team members as each has different characters and skills. These differences create a variety of opinions and give rise to conflict within the work team. Furthermore, their team cannot strengthen the relationship immediately because Neha, Yo-Yo and Stuart have doubts about Billy and Nick's abilities and look down on them. As an example, at 00:63:21 minute.

They do not receive a suggestion from Billy when he tries to explain an idea, he has for an application which already exists and does not follow the development of modern technology. While Nicky as his best friend also agrees with that outdated idea without knowing anything. This indicates that they are still in the process of adapting to each group member ability.

SOCIAL LOAFING

In this movie, this social loafing started are because Neha, Yo-Yo and Stuart see Billy and Nick as useless during a task and immediately treated them with disrespect since they cannot contribute and help anything against the group. For example, during the Task to find a bug in the code, Billy and Nick talked loudly to solve the problem of the code even though their conversation was completely useless and only disturbed the other members who worked hard to find the bug. we can see this scene in the 00:45:57 minute.

This causes their contributions in the group to be very low as well as they feel themselves useless and not be making the effort to do anything about the task. Next, they will assume that someone else will take the initiative to complete the task. Hence, the social loafing occurs.

3.4 i.

SUGGESTION TO INCREASE TEAM COHESIVENESS MEMBER INTERACTION

My suggestion to increase team cohesiveness is by interacting between group members. For example, sharing about past work experience or identify each member’s strengths to determine and divide appropriate work and tasks for each member. When each team member has a task based on their skills, it will benefit the group because each job will be done correctly and much faster. By explaining the role like this, it will also ensure that each member understands which goals or objectives should be achieved thus will create understanding and will increase team cohesive between members. ii.

RESOLVE TEAM CONFLICTS.

In addition, other way to increase team cohesiveness is by resolving problems and conflicts in the group. As seen in this movie, various problems arise between groups from time to time. So, in order to enhance cooperation between groups, these occurring problems need to be observed by each group manager to be resolved such as discussing with the members involved for a solution agreed upon by both parties. For example, Lyle as a manager needs to discuss and speak honestly with Billy and Nick that their skills and thinking are weak and make it difficult for other group members. Meanwhile, Lyle also needs to ask other group members to guide Billy and Nick so they understand what needs to be done. Lastly, he needs to provide solutions such as asking them to study more and follow the latest developments.

FOUNDATION OF TEAM DYNAMICS

a) FACTORS LED TO TEAM SUCCESS i.

Communication between members.

The team success happens because of teamwork. If there are no teamwork, nothing can happen when you work as a team. In this movie, The Internship, the first factor of team success is communication between members. In this team, we got Billy, Nick, Stuart, Neha, Yo-Yo and Lyle as a leader. For the second challenge they had to face, Billy act as a leader to convince his team members to play Quidditch competition passionately. Billy told them to believe in themselves and try to play for the team. It is because they had no teamwork before this. After a break time talk, all of them got the team spirit and start to play passionately. Even though they were not won the game, at least they became as one team for the first time.

ii.

Have trust and believe each other.

Other than that, in the final challenge, their team won the all the challenges and be accepted as an employee at Google company. It is because they trust and believe each other. For the last challenge, they had to convince any company which had not using Google to advertise their product in online. Once again, they put the trust on Billy and Nick to try again to convince that company after they have failed to do so. As a result, they not give up and got that Pizza Restaurant which makes them won the challenges.

b) REFERENCE OF SCENES

i.

The scenes are at 0:53:49 and 0:55:26 minutes show the team gathered in break time of first half of Quidditch game to communicate and discuss the strategies.

ii.

The scenes are at 1:44:33 and 1:46:24 minutes show Billy, Nick, Stuart, Neha, Yo-Yo and Lyle at Pizza Restaurant to convince a businessman to use Google service for their advertisement.

c) TEAM SUCCESS BASED ON CHAPTER 5: FOUNDATION OF TEAM DYNAMIC

Communication is important as we believe and trust each other. No communication and no trust could not achieve anything. The collaborative in their team make them win and become an employee at Google company complete all the challenges when as intern. Moreover, communication can make them work effectively together. They can solve their problems when they talk to each other. For example, Billy and Nick make their teammates realized on how to win the game or challenge by believing in themselves and help each other.

Besides, having a trust among team members can create team cohesiveness in themselves. They believe and trust each other to try again and not give up. Furthermore, their successes made them became more closer and their interpersonal bonds became stronger even they all are not in same age. These showed team also can turned as family in the end.

WORK RELATED STRESS AND STRESS MANAGEMENT

a) CAUSES OF STRESS EXIST IN THIS MOVIE i.

One of the first causes of stress in the movie is two salesmen was jobless due to company shutdown. Based on scene 0:04:39, Billy and Nick are salesmen in Sammy Boscoe Sale Company. They are having a nice chatting with their friend, Bob at the restaurant. Suddenly, their friend told them that Nick and Billy’s workplace company was abruptly shut down and this caused huge problems for themselves as they lost income to cover their living expenses and makes them anxious to find a new job that suits their skills and abilities.

ii.

The second cause of stress is lack of ideas of creativity and innovative thoughts. In minutes 1:02:19, Billy and his participate in second Intern Challenge which is create an app. Based on that scene, they thought that their team will loss in the first Intern Challenge because they have fierce competitor whose is Graham Hawtrey team. They felt criticized after watched the Graham Hawtrey video for first Intern Challenge and thinking they cannot beat them. Thus, Billy’s team is lacking creativity ideas to create an application. According to that, they stressed whenever they cannot think a powerful idea to beat other competitor to get the jobs in Google Company.

iii.

The third cause of stress is when their team loses because one of their team members has made an unintentional mistake. In scene of 1:35:25 minutes, shown that Billy makes an unintentional mistake during Google Helpline challenge. That give a bad consequence to he and his team. Billy thinks they will win for the Google Helpline challenge as he explorer and studied hard about Google Helpline. This is due to Billy’s negligence of not recording his conversations with clients when their group competed to win a job at Google Company. This left Billy feeling guilty for having caused their group to lose even after working hard together and going through various obstacles to get in that stage. According to that, Billy wants to quit as being an intern because he thinks he might let a whole team down in last challenge.

b) REFERENCE OF SCENES IN MOVIE

i.

In scene 07:19 minutes and 11:20 minutes show their feeling when they knew the company they work was shut down. They also feel shocked after knowing the news and dejected because they were already jobless. The company they work were shut down and they had to find other jobs that suitable to their skills.

ii.

In minutes 1:03:22, Billy gives an absurd idea or concept to his team because his idea on creates an application was already exists and it was lame or old school idea. However, Billy constantly with his idea or concept.

iii.

Scene in 1:35:54 minutes show Billy already want to give up because of him, a whole team were losing in second challenge which is Google helpline challenge. In in 1:36:46 minutes, he decided to quit be an intern otherwise his team would not winning also get job and working in Google company.

c) WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS IN SCENES OF THE INTERNSHIP MOVIE

i.

One of the ways to manage stress is they need to change their perceptions to always think positively and find new jobs that allow them to gain new experiences and expand their knowledge. To overcome the stress is Billy tried searching the suitable jobs for them. Based on scene in minutes 13.32, Billy searched on the internet about jobs that might suits for him and his friend, Nick. Unfortunately, there no jobs that suits for him and Nick. Suddenly, he got an inspiration by the Google desktop. He thinking to applied job at Google company. So, he registered his name and Nick in intern interview, and they passed the interview also was accepted to be an intern at Google company.

a) At this scene, Billy searched jobs on the internet for him and Nick. At same times, the got inspiration to apply the jobs for them as an internship at Google company.

b) In minutes 17:19, Billy told Nick that he already found them a suitable job as internship at Google company. At the times, Nick was shocked and unbelievable that Billy applied jobs for them without told him first. Billy explained to Nick that they must do an interview to be an internship at Google company.

c) Even though Nick feels not confident because they both were old and being an intern at Google company might be challenging for them. But Billy and Nick were pass the

interview and being the internship at Google company. Based on scene at minutes 26.43, they already arrived at Google company as first day being an internship.

ii.

Second way to overcome stress is get some fresh air to relax the mind or tried to calm down with doing somethings that we loved to do such as eating, enjoyed some entertainment, reading, drawing and other else. In minutes 1:05:41, Billy and his team felt very stress thinking an idea on creating an application for their first intern challenge to beat Graham’s team. Due to that, Billy and his team make decision to having a break a little while with take a fresh air for reduce their stress. They spend time together for a while with going dinner at Chinese restaurant and drinking at night clubbing. Besides that, they also having some fun at night club.

a. Based on picture above 1:06:36, Billy and his team having a dinner at Chinese restaurant, they also having a chatting with customer and waiter in restaurant. With doing that, they feel less stress than before.

b. In scene 1:09:47. After they are having a dinner at Chinese restaurant, they go to night club to drinking and having fun with his team for released their stress and tension thinking about an idea in first challenge.

iii.

The last way to overcome they stress is having a moral support from people that we closed to for not give up easily and it also will be reducing the stress feeling a little bit.

In scene of 1:42:18 minutes, Nick as a best friend to Billy tried to give some advice for him to join his team again. It is because Nick saw a talented and enthusiastic in Billy. That shown a moral support to someone who have down or stress with their own selves like Billy. Billy felt miserable because he makes his whole team disappoint with him. He also has been studied a while night explorer about Google in order to win the second challenge. But unfortunately, he makes a little mistake during their second task. Moreover, as Billy’s best friend, Nick persuades Billy to not give up and remind Billy the reason why they come being an intern in Google company. It is because they want to get a good job at Google also starting a new life with better job.

a) Scene in 1:42:18 minutes shown Nick tried to persuade Billy to join his team back even though it might be hard for them to winning the internship competition. But they might have a little chance and hope to win if they work hard together as one team.

b) in 1:42:11 minutes, Nick tells the Billy how amazing he is. According to Nick story, Billy is a strong man that going through his hard life. Nick also giving an advice that life a hard,

but we cannot to give up on it. Even though we fall, that’s not mean that we fail forever in our life.
