Description

Homework #1

1. Name five current operating systems and the computers or configurations each operates.  Microsoft Windows is the current operating system that has been used for more than 40 years. The operating system is used for most of home or office computers. Users may use Microsoft Windows for personal or business matters. Microsoft Windows can be considered as one of the most user-friendly operating system.  Apple macOS is the operating system from Apple that runs on Apple hardware such as Apple Mac (PC or Laptop). Apple macOS is different from Microsoft Windows since its only available for Apple products only. Apple macOS is popular for its speed and accuracy, which users can use it for professional use.  Linux operating system is unlike the other operating systems because the development of the operating system itself isn’t led by one company only. Other programmers all over the world can collaborate to develop the code for the operating system. Linux is usually used in computers and laptops.  Ubuntu is an open source code operating system, which means many people can collaborate to share codes to develop the operating system which makes it similar to Linux. However, the platform for Ubuntu is limited to some platforms although it can run on smartphones or computers.  Android is a non-computer operating system, which targets for smartphones. Most smartphones (except Apple smartphones) and tablets are using Android to be applicable for users. Android is considered as a flexible operating system because users can tweak the operating system as the user wishes. 2. Name the five key concepts about an operating system that you think a user needs to know and understand. To understand clearly about an operating system, user need to know the five fundamental concepts of the operating system, which are the five tasks that an operating system can and will do. The five tasks are Main Memory Management, Processor Management, Device Management, File Management, and User Interface. These five tasks are the main tasks of an operating system so that user can manage their files, data, and memory. Nowadays, most modern operating systems has the special manager to manage network called Network Management. The development and the usage of internet has been widely used which makes Network Management is a very useful task in an operating system.

3. Explain the impact of the evolution of computer hardware and the accompanying evolution of operating systems software. As computers developed, so did Operating Systems. Both have a strong connection and relationship of each other which makes Operating Systems developed along with the development of computer hardware. Supercomputers then developed to support and handle government matters. This means that the supercomputer needs to process a massive number of data. This pushes Operating Systems to develop as well. The Operating Systems that was used for supercomputers are IRIX, Linux, and

Homework #1 UNICOS. In the 1970s, a microcomputer was developed in order to support small institutions that only used a few dozen users. The Operating System used by microcomputers are Linux, UNIX, and Windows, which are one of the most common Operating Systems. Powerful microcomputers are called workstations which were used for commercial, education, and other enterprises. Servers were developed along with the demand of using workstations that requires network. Both workstations and servers started to use Linux, UNIX, and Windows. However, these Operating Systems have developed and upgraded into better versions with better performances. The most significant development of hardware and Operating Systems is when Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) such as smartphones, tablets, and other similar gadgets become widely used all over the world. New Operating Systems were developed such as Blackberry OS, Windows Mobile, Android, iOS, even Operating Systems for smart watches such as Apple Watch OS....
