Description

Week 9 Workshop: Assessment 3 discussion; Enablement foundations OT Theory Student copy Background/outcomes At the end of this workshop students will be able to:  Identify occupational justice issues and explore enablement foundations in that context  Apply enablement foundations and skills to a community group experiending occupational injustice.

Readings: Cantin, N & Brousseau, M. (2017). Canadian Practice Process Framework. In M. Curtin, M. Egan, & J. Adams (Eds.) Occupational therapy for people experiencing illness, injury or impairment. PREWORKSHOP It is very important that students have watched the lecture from this week (parts 1 and 2) Activity 1 – Complete both readings (30 mins) Make study notes on the Enablement foundations      

Choice, risk, responsibility Client participation Visions of possibility Change Justice Power-sharing

Make study notes on the CPPF action points. (Note this reading may be deferred until week 10 as it will largely apply to that workshop).        

Enter, initiate Setting the stage Assess, Evaluate Agree on objectives and plan Implement the plan Monitor and modify Evaluate outcome Conclude/exit

Be prepared to use your notes in the LIVE group discussion - this will centre on a community example. Activity 2 – Read the pdf paper in the Apply section of the learning resources for this week (Gammon(2019)). Then read the following scenario as preparation for group discussion in the live workshop. (10 mins) Inspired by the story of OT’s working to bring health care to homeless people in LA, you determine to explore the situation in Townsville. In your final placement in 4th year you had the opportunity to work in a community based clinic where you met and engaged with a small number of people who had no fixed address. After

talking with some of your colleagues, you decide to move toward establishing partnerships for your vision of increasing accessibility of health care and enhancing occupational engagement with people who are experiencing homelessness in Townsville.

LIVE Collaborate Students need to ensure their mics are working. Activity 1 – Assessment 3 overview (20 minutes) Main group discussion

ASSESSMENT TASK 3: DESCRIPTION Students must complete this assignment as a requirement for successful completion of the subject. This assignment requires you to provide a written analysis of an authentic practice example of an occupational therapist working in partnership with a community to develop and deliver a program aimed at enhancing occupational opportunities and engagement. You will be presented with a video lecture series in which an occupational therapist explores the various processes she undertook in partnership with the Groote Eylandt, Warnindilyakwa people when designing, delivering and evaluating / modifying a program focusing on occupational enablement within that community. You will use the case example discussed in this lecture series to construct an analysis of the way in which a variety of occupational therapy theoretical frameworks have been applied in partnering with the Warnindilyakwa community. Specifically your assignment will include the following elements. Please note, each of these elements (in bolded text below) may be used as sub-headings to assist in structuring this assessment piece. 1. Background to the Warnindilyakwa people, Machado-Joseph disease and overview of the ‘On country’ therapy program. [Approx. 200-300 words]. 2. Analysis of three ‘occupational therapy enablement foundations’ applied in the design and/or delivery of ‘On country’ therapy. [Approx. 900 words – i.e. 300 words for each of the three enablement foundations discussed]. In addressing this section of the assignment you must: 

Provide a brief explanation of each of the three enabling foundations that you discuss. One or more academic references should be cited for each of these explanations.

Examine in detail how each of these enabling foundations have been applied in promoting successful collaboration and positive outcomes within the ‘On country’ therapy program. It is important that you draw on specific examples of actions taken within the program to substantiate your discussion. You will need to provide an analysis of the application of enabling foundations in this section (not just a description). This means you will need to examine the way in which the enablement foundations were adopted; why they were adopted in the way that they were; and how they impacted on program outcomes.

3. Analysis of the application of enabling skills in relation to three action points of the Canadian Practice Process Framework (CPPF) within the design and delivery of the ‘On

country’ program. [Approx. 900 words i.e. 300 words for action point]. In addressing this section of the assignment you will identify and analyse three action points within the CPPF that you believe have been of critical importance to the ‘On country’ program. It may be useful to review the application of the CPPF to Community Development presented by Grandisson & Sauvageau (2017 p. 379) from your reading list when choosing which action points of the CPPF you are going to focus on in this section.

For each of the three action points you must: 

Critically examine the processes undertaken within the action point and analyse why these processes were undertaken, how they impacted on project outcomes and (if applicable) alternative or additional steps that may have been beneficial to the project.

Based on the information provided in the recordings discuss one enabling skill that was applied during each of the three action points that you are examining. (Please note this might mean that you analyse the application of three different enabling skills in total, however, it is acceptable to discuss the application of the same enabling skill at more than one action point should you choose to).

Discuss the way in which the application of the enabling skill has positively impacted the successful completion of the specific stage (action point) of the CPPF that you are analysing. Within this section you may also choose to examine whether (and in what way) the enabling skills that you discuss might have been applied differently in order to further enhance the project outcomes.

As was the case with your analysis of enablement foundations, it is important that you draw on specific examples of actions taken within the program to substantiate your discussion as to the way in which the enablement skills were applied within this section of your assignment.

4. Suggested next steps to ensure program success and sustainability. [Approx. 300-500 words] In addressing this section of the assignment you must: 

Consider the progress of the project to date (based on the information provided in the recordings) and discuss the next steps that you would take to ensure the continued success and long-term sustainability of the initiative.

Discuss two further actions that you would take if you were the occupational therapist responsible for the program, in order to achieve ongoing success and sustainability of the initiative.

Discuss how you would involve the Warnindilyakwa people in these actions / processes.

Present an argument as to why the actions that you are recommending are likely to be beneficial and discuss the likely benefits of their implementation. [Appropriate academic references should be used to substantiate this argument].

Your assignment should be a maximum of 2500 words in length. It should be typed using Arial or Times New Roman 12 point, left justified, and double spaced. A reference list is to be included that adheres to APA7th referencing conventions. The assignment is to be submitted in Safe Assign on LearnJCU along with a completed cover sheet.

(From Pre-Workshop) Activities 1 and 2 – Enablement foundations - application to homeless community in Townsville (30 mins) In the pre-workshop activity you familiarised yourself with a brief article and scenario. You will be allocated to a breakout group and given 2 enablement foundations to work with. Using the information from the LA project and your ideas for Townsville, identify appropriate enablement foundations strategies/applications OTs (and/or other health professionals) could use. Develop some examples to illustrate these. If one or both of your allocated enablement foundations are not being applied in LA can you suggest how these could be explored and potentially incorporated into the Townsville project? (10 minutes) Back in the main group, share your ideas briefly with your colleagues. One person from each group should be prepared to share your group’s discussion outcomes in the main group (using microphones). (10 mins) Main group discussion on paths to homelessness. (10 mins) Trigger questions  

What vulnerabilities are you aware of that could set a person on a path to homelessness? What occupational barriers could there be to people accessing: o Housing o Employment o

Training/Education

o o

Health care Financial management assistance?

How could we work alongside people to enable them to tell their story and identify their needs?...
