Description

Iago Quotes Themes: ❇Machiavellian❇Dangerofambition❇Loyalty❇Biblical Act 1: 1. ‘I follow him to serve my turn upon him’ ➡In the beginning of the play, Iago speaks to Roderigo explaining his covert hatred towards Othello by highlighting to the reader his initial intention for Othello’s downfall. On appearance, Iago is a loyal, worthy and trusted confidante but his vindictive and Machiavellian nature seeps through- he is a double-edged sword. There is a biblical reference from the very beginning of the act as Iago presented as the serpent in the Garden of Eden- understanding the art of false friendships and effectively manipulating Othello’s naivety afar.

Act 2: 1. ‘With this little web as I will ensnare a great fly as Cassio’➡ In the second act, Iago demonstrates to the audience his manipulative strategies. The use of the dramatic device of the ‘aside’ allows the audience to witness his ambition of Othello’s downfall in turn characterising him as the villain with deceitful and corrupt intentions. The theme of loyalty which Iago has towards Othello can alternatively be viewed as a psychological device for Iago plans. Iago’s jealously and determination makes him a loyal friend to Othello as he seeks to destroy those who aid Othello in identifying those not loyal around him, like Cassio. Iago increases the tension by metaphorically by continuing to light the fuel that Cassio has lit. Likewise, Othello will perceive Cassio as distrustful- unmercifully steering towards Iago- his trusted confidante who can never betray him. Iago is constructing a web of lies for those close to Othello- to eventually defeat Othello for himself....
