Biographical sketch o Born, college student, family, future…unknown Agency-the ability to choose o Hedonism  Our choices tend to benefit us  Do good to look good  Buy the best things to look the best  Cover up how things really are with makeup, clothes, other purchases  Give in hopes of getting back  Kind so people will be kind back or so they will give you something extra  Use people  Climb the ladder regardless of who you step on  Suffering- we do everything we can not to suffer but then we never learn and we become spoiled and selfish and impatient and entitled o Suffering is good, how we learn o Helps us appreciate the good o Life is usually suffering and surprises us with good  Moral relativity as a society, we are trending more toward moral relativism or everyone is their own moral center  Base decisions on your own values, what feels right rather that what is actually right (some logic needs to be involved in morals) o Thrownness (May)  Certain things we cannot control/choose  Fight fate (same sex marriage, gender, have to be loved, have to be the best, have to have or be or get this one thing so you fight and do anything you can to get it) (hedonism) never brings satisfaction  Give up and it will come  Irrational Beliefs: not so much about the event or situation but more about how we think about it (we can choose how we see things) Timing and Values o Timing can explain a lot of behavior  Examples o Values are true beliefs and ways of doing things-what is important, cool, happy, sad, good, bad, etc.  People are born with values/impossible to not have values  Universal values like love, service, etc.  It is possible to change your values, some more built in than others/ can add or take away  Learn values from other people (good or bad)  Fill world/basket with others thoughts and ideas and values  Conflict comes when there are competing values  Compromise is adjusting values

 

Religion role is to teach values School teaches skills but values are practiced  Kids try out values and adjust accordingly...
