Project Plan/Proposal Paper for Outreach Activities (DRAFT)

1. Objectives of the Project Stray dogs live in the open and do not have homes. They may be seen roving in packs, foraging for food, and looking for shelter. Most stray dogs are scared of humans, and usually stay out of your way. However, some may approach and sniff you.

This project aims to provide an educational service and to promote responsible dog ownership in Sta. Maria Bulcan by providing activities and seminars to reach dog owners of the future, or to give talks and supply useful literature to any interested community groups. The “We Care For Dogs” program or WCFD is a humane, science-based approach to managing the stray dog population where the top priority is to promote responsible dog ownership as well as to reduce the current population of stray dogs. Through this program, we could help the community by reducing the overpopulation of streets and dogs through programs and promoting local adoptions. Improving the health status of homeless

dogs through vaccinations and coordinating medical care in cooperation with our veterinary team. Fighting the dog meat trade through advocacy and education. Reducing the death rate by helping people understand that there are solutions other than killing dogs. School education activities to make the younger generation more aware of animal welfare.

2. Project Description The program “We Care for Dogs” encourages and promotes proper care, responsibility, and love for the dogs. It has benefits not only meant for the dogs but to the owners and to the environment as well. It will take place in Brgy. Poblacion, Santa Maria Bulacan. The program is mostly composed of seminars and some activities to add fun to our program. Everyone is invited, especially those who own dogs in the said community. The program aims to create awareness about the bitter reality of dogs in shelters or compounds and educate them on the duties and responsibilities of a dog owner to the citizens of Brgy. Poblacion. The program will start with a seminar providing information about pet ownership. It can also be a big help to those people who are still planning to adopt a dog. We will give enlightenment to everyone on the responsibility and duties that come with owning a dog. Making them understand that their responsibilities do not only limit to the well-being of the dog but are

also extended to the community. It includes being liable for the damages, harm, or injury your dog has done to others or to the environment. The “We Care For Dogs” program is created with an intention to leave people with knowledge, awareness, and happiness. We also conducted this program with the hope of people having realization so that they can perform their role as an owner properly. We wanted them to know that dogs have feelings too and that they have the right to live and to be treated well. After all, a dog is a man's best friend, family, and companion in life. The program seeks changes wherein the owners will be encouraged to treat their dogs with utmost love and care and that no dogs shall face the cruelty of reality.

3. Problem/Current Situation of the Community Dogs are the first domesticated animals. In the past, the role of dogs in people’s lives, for most of the time, was a worker instead of a companion. They were kept because of practical uses such as livestock herding, hunting and guarding, etc. But sometimes, people tend to have a dog at home just for fun and they treat it like a toy at first then eventually they get tired of it and start not taking care of it. Nowadays, many street dogs are lurking around the neighborhood, road, trash cans, anywhere on the streets. One of the reasons why these dogs are abandoned by their owners, It’s that these owners are not mentally, physically and even financially prepared to have a dog. They are not aware of the responsibilities and duties of being a dog owner. There are also people who adopt a dog but don't know how to take care of it, they just adopt dogs because they are cute. These owners tend to easily get tired taking care of their pet, because they don't have the 100% willingness. They started to forget to feed them, give them water, and as a result many of the dogs died. There is a huge surge in animal abuse cases involving street dogs who are usually not kept in a good environment and are ill-treated at home. Every dog owner or future dog owners must know that taking care of a dog is not simple and there are expenses that must be incurred in order to take care of a dog. If a person wants to take care of a dog, they must make sure that they can provide the dog needs like vaccines, check-ups, foods and essentials to dogs. If they knew that they couldn’t afford taking care of a dog, they must not adopt one. Dogs shouldn’t suffer. People must think wisely when adopting a dog to their home because dogs are loving creatures that just want to give us love.

4. Benefits that will be derived from the Project A pet's unconditional love can do more than just keep you company. Some people are naturally drawn to animals and will be interested in the various ways they may aid dogs, cats, and other animals who are in need, but this is not applicable for everyone. Unfortunately, some animals, particularly dogs, become stray and homeless, because of various reasons. This project is another great approach to teach about animal rights while also benefiting our local community. Here are some of the benefits of We Care for Dogs: First, the project would mold the people to be responsible pet owners and convince the dog owners to not abandon their pets. This project would make them realize that as a dog owner they must know their duties and responsibilities when it comes to owning a dog. Abandoning dogs is not a good practice of good dog owners, thus, these practices must stop or else it would cause a serious community problem. People of the community would be aware about the consequences of abandoning their dogs. It would also be an eye opener for every dog owner that they must practice good and positive pet ownership practices. Another benefit of this program is it would transform the community to be a more caring and dog-friendly community. Some individuals neglect and hurt the stray dogs, they tend to be harsh to them and there are a times that it could lead to animal cruelty. As a human being, they must treat the dogs as a friend and better as a family member. Remember they have lives too! Thus, through this project, people would realize that the community is for dogs too, this must also be their safe place and people must show their love and care. Stray dogs are fond of opening garbage bin bags, so the trash is scattered all over the property or streets. They also often release their feces everywhere and this causes an unwanted smell that could affect the people’s health. Through this program, it also benefits the environment. This will make the environment clean and disease-free. As the number of stray dogs decreases, the number of dogs opening garbage bin bags decreases too and the chances of having an illness coming from this could lessen. It would also reduce the chances of dog bite incidents. Children are, by far, the most common victims of dog bites. And through this project, responsible dog ownership can help reduce the risk of these incidents. Rabies is dangerous for humans, and it could kill too. So as this project is implemented it would prevent rabies incidents. There are also some incidents where stray dogs run onto the road and this could result in car crashes or motor/bike accidents. So as one of the benefits of this project, it would lessen road accidents and promote a safe environment for the community. The only animal with which humans have a stronger affinity than any other is dogs. Dogs, on the other hand, are one of the most common pets to be abused. Hundreds of other cases of dog mistreatment exist, ranging from puppy mills and other poor breeding practices to dogs being

punished for legitimate activities like resource guarding. As the people become well-educated and aware of the proper care and the consequences of their wrong doings. This become the start to lessen the of cases regarding animal cruelty. Allowing animals to reproduce with little chance of finding homes for their offspring, as well as pets being discarded by owners who can no longer keep or desire their animals, are the main causes of pet overpopulation. We become aware of and practice the things we learn from the program by supporting this. To relieve overcrowding in pet shelters, we can adopt stray animals and neuter our pets.
