Expected Pharmacological Action Act directly to relax smooth muscle in the bladder and decreases detrusor muscle contractions, inhibits the effects of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors. The result is increased bladder capacity and a decreased urge to void

Therapeutic Use Treats overactive bladder, relief of symptoms of bladder instability

Complications - drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, tachycardia, dry mouth, nausea, urinary hesitancy, decreased sweating

Medication Administration PO, transdermal system

Contraindications/Precautions Contraindications: allergy, GI obstruction, obstructive urinary tract problems, glaucoma, acute hemorrhage Precautions: renal or hepatic disease, pregnancy and lactation.

Interactions CNS depressants, ketoconazole, opioid agonists, other anticholinergics, parasympathomimetics, prokinetic agents

Nursing Interventions - assess GI and hepatic function - assess for underlying UTI - monitor CV reactions - monitor for angioedema - monitor urinary output - monitor urinalysis, urine culture and sensitivity, renal and hepatic function tests - arrange opthalmological examination
