PAAS 206 COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS FROM AND ABOUT ASIA TWF 1:30-2:20 Clearihue A303 SPRING 2020 PROF: Michael Bodden OFFICE HOURS W 2:30-4:30 OFFICE: Clearihue C218 PHONE: 250-721-6272 Introduction Graphic novels and comics have become increasingly popular throughout the world, in part through the 1990s global boom in manga sales in Europe and North America. This course will offer an introduction to the history and some of the key themes and styles of comics and graphic novels in the Asia-Pacific region. In the course of the semester, we will read a variety of graphic narratives from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the USA and Canada. In so doing, we will also engage in initial analyses of important issues in graphic representation including how form and style shape narratives, what is special about comics and graphic narratives, what kinds of themes have been taken up, and how we can read these themes against the broader background of post-World War Two history in the Asia-Pacific region. Grade Scheme Attendance and Participation 10% This class is intended to be both fun and to give a serious introduction to this vital and fascinating medium as it is practiced in the Asia-Pacific region. Your attendance and participation, not to mention your interest and enthusiasm, are crucial to the success of the course as a whole. Attendance is especially important during the sessions at which your classmates give their group presentations and project showcases. Respect the efforts and contributions of your fellow students! Reading Log 15% You will be required to write some brief analytical comments on at least 5 of the narratives which the class will read together. You can choose which five you want to comment on, but please, do not wait until the last five. These will be submitted to the forums on the Course Spaces site so that other students can see and respond to them. They must be submitted to the site on the day before the first class in which we begin to discuss that narrative as a class. These will not be graded, but you will only receive credit if you show that you have given more than a couple minutes thought to what you have written. Do not just write something like “This one was really cool!” or “I hated this one!” You may feel either of those things but you will need to explain why by briefly analyzing one or more aspects of that graphic narrative. Mid-Term 7 February 25% Will cover the narratives, history, and formal/theoretical concepts discussed in the first 5 weeks of the course. This will be a 50 minute in class exam with a combination of simple identification of names, titles, characters, genres, or concepts, and a longer essay comparing some aspect of two or more of the narratives we will read in the first half of the course.

Presentations 15% These will be undertaken by individuals or groups of not more than 3- 4 students and will involve analyzing the form and content of one of your favorite manga or other graphic narrative. These presentations should be about 8 minutes in length for individuals and 20 minutes for groups. You should make use of visuals, short excerpts from anime adaptations of the graphic narrative you are analyzing that illustrate your key points, or some other creative media that help get your main argument across and maintain the interest of your fellow students. Try to briefly discuss some of the key stylistic features and themes of the work(s) you will present. Second Quiz 11 March 10% This quiz will be short but will cover information from lectures and analyses of Chinese, Korean and Southeast Asian comics. Final paper or project (5-7 pages) DUE 3 April 25% These can be straight analytical papers discussing the form and theme of a graphic narrative, or they can be creative projects such as sharing a series of illustrations, your own manga, computer graphics, or any other creative or inventive project that takes as its main subject graphic narratives and the Asia-Pacific region. These projects will be presented to the class in the final week's class sessions (depending on the number of projects completed).
