Description

Topic 2: Influence of Race and Ethnicity: Media Analysis Worksheet Directions: Watch a film, television show, listen to a radio program, or read a short story with an identified main character. Answer the following questions with a minimum of 250 words each. 1. What is the name of the show/movie and who was the main character examined? Barry on the network HBO, was the television show I examined. Barry is a comedy/ drama show about the main character Barry Berkman. He is forty-year-old white male who is an ex-marine, who is currently working as a hitman. He has a revelation while performing a hit to leave his work as a hitman and become an actor. He starts to attend an acting class in secret while trying to figure out how to leave his pervious gig as a hitman.

2. Briefly describe the conflict the main character experienced, what drove the story? Barry wants to stop killing people and working as a hitman and try to be an actor. The problem is the man he is working for has manipulated him into thinking being a hitman is the only thing he is good at. He is assigned a job to kill an aspiring actor in an acting class, but upon meeting him he is inspired to join the acting class as well and leave his hitman days behind. The man he is working for threatens to turn Barry in for his crimes, if he quits working for him, so Barry is conflicted on what he should do. He also connects with other members in his acting class and finds a girlfriend. He doesn’t want to get caught for his crimes as he finally likes his life now and wants to find a future in acting.

3. Using Freud’s theory, what psychodynamic structures (id, ego, and superego) were in conflict, what were the desires of each structure? e.g., A boy’s Id may want the boy to ask a girl out but his Ego might resist the urge because he could get turned down and feel hurt. Barry’s Id wants to stop killing people for money, but his Superego is challenged as the man he is working for is a family friend and has been manipulating him ever since he left the marines and society is telling him that clearly, killing people is not okay. The man he is working for has been destroying Barry’s ideals of violence in society, he has been told the only thing he is good at is killing people, so his Superego is weak to what his boss has been telling him. That can relate to his Ego as he now has aspirations to become an actor, but his Ego is weakened by being told that killing people is all he is only talent in life. Barry is hesitant to take the jump to become a serious actor as a career choice.

4. Review Psychoanalytic defense mechanisms, identify and describe three defenses used by any of the characters in the show. One of the characters on the show is a member of the acting class, Sally. She has been trying to become an actor for most of her adult life. She used to be in an abusive marriage but had left it a few years back. When recalling the marriage, she explained this whole story of how she told her ex-husband that he can never touch her again and she stood up for herself. What really happened was that she did not stand up for herself and had to have a friend make her leave in the middle of the night. Sally was in Denial of how she left her marriage and refused that she was weak and couldn’t leave her husband. Barry uses Reaction Formation in his relationship with his mentor/boss. When Barry gets discharged from the army, he has not family except for his mentor. His mentor does not have Barry’s best interests in mind and just wants to use him for his skills he had in the military. Barry at some level recognizes that but has a dependent relationship on his mentor and cannot leave him, regardless of how many times he tries. Barry also uses Intellectualization when he is forced to kill people for his job. He has to categorize his emotions to be able to kill other people. He has to kill a friend’s girlfriend as she figured out his secrets of being a hitman, but he has to get rid of all emotion he has for her in order to preserve himself.

5. Using Adler’s Individual psychotherapy, briefly describe how feelings of inferiority may contribute to the conflict in the media observed. Adler’s Individual psychotherapy introduces the feelings of inferiority, basically that everyone has self-doubt that they are not achieving enough. Barry has strong feelings of inferiority of not being able to achieve his dream of becoming an actor. Take for example he had a part in a play that didn’t go according to plan and he ended up underperforming and disappointing himself. How he deals with that, is he resulted back to his assassin ways and performed a hit. He did not feel comfortable with himself and his achievements of acting so he regressed back into his hitman ways.
