KEY: 1. How many generations are represented in the chart for Hitchhiker’s Thumb? 4 2. How many heterozygous individuals are there in each generation? I - 1, II - 4, III - 5, IV - 4 3. How many people in the family were born having a Hitchhiker’s Thumb? 3 4. From which parent did the second-generation children inherit the Hitchhiker’s allele? their father (I - 2) 5. In which generation did Hitchhiker’s Thumb first show? III 6. How would you describe person #7 in generation III? homozygous recessive for h.t. 7. How would you describe person #6 in generation IV? heterozygous, does not have h.t. 8. Who did persons #1 and #2 in generation IV inherit the Hitchhiker’s Thumb allele from? their father (III - 2) Create your Own Pedigree…

1. What can you determine about a family using a pedigree chart? You can trace how a trait is inherited through a family. You can see if a trait was inherited from one or both parents or not at all. 2. Most of the time, you cannot determine if someone who shows the dominant traits is homozygous dominant or heterozygous. If you cannot determine the genotype of someone who shows the dominant trait, which pedigree symbol cannot be used? Why not? The half-filled symbol cannot be used because we have no way to know if the person exhibits the dominant trait because they are homozygous dominant or heterozygous. Both of these allele combinations would display the dominant trait.
