ASSIGNMENT: PERSONAL CODE OF ETHICS Given the increased attention ethics is receiving in the news, classrooms, board rooms, and courtrooms, it is more important than ever for students to be prepared for the ethical challenges and issues they will face on a daily basis as a businessperson. Essentially, ethics is the application of what each of us believes to be right and wrong into our daily lives and specific situations. Your individual personal beliefs form your own “code of ethics” that is specific to you and govern your interactions with others in your personal and professional relationships. This assignment is designed to guide you through an examination and expression of your own beliefs and value systems. In the final installment, you will be asked to synthesize your morals into a personal code of ethics that may govern your interactions with others in your personal and professional relationships. There are no right or wrong answers to this assignment. Your grade will be based on demonstrated effort. Examination: Complete the following exercises as a means of examining your own ethical belief system. Part 1:

Who am I? Write at least ten statements beginning “I am...”

Part 2:

What do I value? Write at least ten statements beginning “I value...because...”

Part 3:

What do I believe? Write at least ten statements beginning “I believe that...”

Part 4:

What has experience taught me? Write at least ten statements beginning “I have learned that...”

Part 5:

What are my expectations for others? Write at least ten statements beginning “In my interactions with others, I expect them to...”

Part 6:

What inspires me? List at least five quotes that inspire/guide you and their sources.

Application: Translate your statements from the foregoing exercises into a set of ethical guidelines that you intend to guide your behavior and decision-making process in your personal (non-family) and professional relationships by writing at least ten statements beginning “I will...” The work product that you turn in will consist of Parts 1-6 AND the application.
