Description

General Biology Photosynthesis Lab All energy comes from the sun. The sun shines and plants take the sun light and use it for energy to produce carbohydrates. These carbohydrates are then eaten by animals for energy. This energy carries through all species on Earth. For this lab you are going to study what type of light causes the best photosynthesis in three types of plants. Go to the following website: http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/LS12/LS12.html Follow the instructions on the left menu bar.

Hypothesis: Plants growth is most under Red light.

Write out the procedure for this experiment. Make sure to write it so another scientist can repeat your experiment Experiment Procedure: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8)

Make sure you have 3 packets of Spinach, Radish and Lettuce. Get 5 different types of light (Red, Violet, Orange, Green and Blue). Pour Spinach into 3 different flower pot. First, Put them under Red light. Watch those grow for 30 days. Measure the height of all 3 plants and calculate the avg and record on table. Repeat the spinach plant growth under 4 other different lights as mention above. Repeat the experiment for Radish and Lettuce under different lights and calculate the avg for each under different lights.

Data: (make sure to label table with a descriptive title) Title: Plant height under different color spectrum Filter Color

Spinach Avg. height (cm)

Radish Avg. Height (cm)

Lettuce Avg. Height (cm)

Red

55/3 = 18.3

39/3 = 13

33/3 = 11

Violet

50/3 = 16.7

30/3 = 10

27/3 = 9

Orange

44/3 = 14.7

24/3 = 8

36/3 = 12

Green

9/3 = 3

3/3 = 1

9/3 = 3

Blue

57/3 = 19

42/3 = 14

18/3 = 6

What variable did you control and which variable did you change? Variable control: Temperature, Room, Plant seed. Variable change: Lights.

Analyze the results of your experiment. Did your data support your hypothesis? Explain (include any differences between seeds). Spinach and Radish has the highest avg height when put under blue light and Lettuce has the highest avg on orange light. No, data did not support my hypothesis.

What conclusion can you draw about which color in the visible spectrum causes the most plant growth From my experiement, Blue color causes the most plant growth....
