Overview This is the second course of a two semester sequence of non-calculus based physics for science students. This course may be used to satisfy a Kent Core requirement. The Kent Core as a whole is intended to broaden intellectual perspectives, foster ethical and humanitarian values, and prepare students for responsible citizenship and productive careers.
Registration/Withdrawal The official registration deadline for this course is January 19, 2020. University policy requires all students to be officially registered in each class they are attending. Students who are not officially registered for a course by published deadlines should not be attending classes and will not receive credit or a grade for the course. Each student must confirm enrollment by checking his/her class schedule (using Student Tools in FlashLine) prior to the deadline indicated. Registration errors must be corrected prior to the deadline. The last day to withdraw from this course without a “W” is January 26, 2020. The last day to withdraw from this course with a “W” is March 22, 2020.
Objectives Students will learn the fundamentals of physics, in the process developing, refining, and honing their mathematical and quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Prerequisites Phy 13001 or Phy 23101. Co-requisite: Phy 13022.
Topics Electricity, Magnetism, Light & Optics, Diffraction, Special Relativity.
Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Explain a wide array of physical phenomena in terms of the behavior of electrons. 2. Predict the behavior of light rays in a variety of situations and circumstances. 3. Extend their competence in physics through relativity and quantum theory. 4. Answer questions and solve mathematical puzzles in a wide variety of situations. 5. Acquire a broad and general knowledge of physics sufficient for success in many programs of study and future careers. In-class Activities: 1. Students will take notes and will be responsible for asking questions for clarification on discussion topics. 2. Students will observe and model the steps in solving content-related mathematical problems. 3. Students will work with teaching assistants to practice solving content-related mathematical problems. Out-of-class Activities: 1. Students will be responsible for reading relevant textbook chapters. 2. Students will be responsible for completing content-related mathematical problems for homework.

Course Materials Textbook Physics, 5e, Walker, Pearson Education, 2017
Online Materials Course announcements and other materials will be posted on Blackboard Learn. Homework assignments will be delivered through Pearson Education’s Modified Mastering Physics online assignment system. Note that you are to purchase access to Modified Mastering Physics, not simply Mastering Physics. The most economical way for you to purchase access to Modified Mastering Physics access is to do so in a bundle with the textbook. These are available at the campus bookstore. You can register for and access Modified Mastering Physics at https://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com. Students must purchase Modified Mastering Physics access. To register for and access Modified Mastering Physics, simply go the course page in Blackboard Learn. At the bottom of the page will be a button which takes you to Modified Mastering Physics.
Evaluation The course grade will be based on three midterm exams (the lowest exam grade is dropped), a cumulative final, and homework. The breakdown of grades is as follows. Homework 30% Recitation Attendance 3 Midterm Exams 45% Final Exam 20%
5%
3
Exams See course schedule below for exam dates. Some material will fall after the material which is covered on the last midterm. Part of the final exam will be devoted to this material, while the remainder will cover material from the rest of the semester. The proportion of the final devoted to each will be determined in due course. Homework Homework is assigned Friday and is due one week after assignment at 11:59 pm unless otherwise noted (see Course Schedule below.) Homework is delivered through Pearson Education’s Modified Mastering Physics online assignment system. Students are permitted six attempts to answer each part of each question. Hints are available.
To discourage random guessing, credit will be deducted for each incorrect answer on multiple-choice and true false questions. The number points deducted will be equal to 100% (number of answer options – 1).
To discourage random guessing, 3% credit will be deducted for each incorrect response on all other questions.
There is no penalty for opening a hint. A 2% bonus is granted for each hint not opened.
Hints are often Socratic in format. A question is offered, the answer to which leads to insight. If a hint is opened, and the hint question not answered, credit will be deducted.
Grading Scale A=93-100%; A-=90-92%; B+=87-89%; B=83-86%; B-=80-82%; C+=77-79%; C=7176%; C-=70-70.99%; D+=67-69%; D=63-66%; D-=60-62%; F=59% or below.
Exam Policies Exams are closed book. The only electronic devices permitted in operation during exams are calculators. Phones must be switched off.
Attendance Lectures Attendance for recitation is mandatory and constitutes 5% of your grade. You may miss two lectures without penalty. After that, absences will be excused due only to 4
valid reasons (see next section concerning valid reasons.) You will get bonus points for perfect attendance. Exams Absences from exams will only be excused given a valid reason, such as : illness (doctor’s note required), deaths in the immediate family and other documented crises, court-imposed legal obligations (e.g., jury duty and subpoenas), and severe weather conditions. Employment schedules and athletic training/practice schedules of students do not comprise a valid excuse. Missed exams must be made up.
Plagiarism Don’t do it. University policy 3-01.8 deals with the problem of academic dishonesty, cheating, and plagiarism. None of these will be tolerated in this class. The sanctions provided in this policy will be used to deal with any violations. If you have any questions, please read the policy at http://www.kent.edu/policyreg/administrative-policy-regarding-student-cheatingand-plagiarism and/or ask.
Students with Disabilities University policy 3-01.3 requires that students with disabilities be provided reasonable accommodations to ensure their equal access to course content. If you have a documented disability and require accommodations, please contact the instructor at the beginning of the semester to make arrangements for necessary classroom adjustments. Please note, you must first verify your eligibility for these through Student Accessibility Services (contact 330-672-3391 or visit www.kent.edu/sas for more information on registration procedures).
