Informative speech on the misconceptions people have about pit bulls...

Description

Hello everyone, my name is Maya and today I will be talking about the horrible misconceptions people have about pit bulls and how this negatively impacts them. Raise your hand If you have ever heard that pit bulls are a dangerous and violent breed. Okay great you can put your hands down. I want to start by breaking that sentence down. Firstly, pit bull isn’t actually a breed of dogs. It is an umbrella term used to identify several different types of dogs that look similar. The three main breeds under this umbrella term are the American pit bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier and the Staffordshire bull terrier. Secondly, there is no evidence to prove that pit bull type dogs are more dangerous than other breeds. In fact, there have been multiple studies done to prove that breed is not a factor when determining aggression or figuring out which dogs are more likely to bite. The reason we often hear about pit bull type dogs being aggressive is because the statistics used by the media are inaccurate due to the inability to identify if a dog is actually a pit bull or not. There are many mixed breeds that produce a short coat and a large square head. Because of misidentification, pit bull type dogs are highly overrepresented in statistics about biting. Unfortunately, this stereotype is affecting pit bull type dogs everywhere, especially in the United States. Each year 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in the U.S., 40% of those dogs are pit bulls. Bit bull type dogs make up the largest population in shelters across north America and are most likely to be euthanized. In some cities across the United States such as Denver and Miami, the Breed Specific Legislation have made owning a pit bull type dog illegal. It is also very common for landlords to refuse renting to people that own pit bulls. Owners struggle to find places to live with their pet and end up having to give them to shelters. True or false: pit bulls have locking jaws, which makes their bites more aggressive and severe. Okay now this is a very common misconception. The jaw of pit bull type dogs has no locking mechanism, it functions the exact same way as any other breed of similar statue. A temperament test consists of putting the dogs in a scenario and seeing if they can determine if it is threatening or not. The dog automatically fails if they show panic without recovery, strong avoidance or unprovoked aggression. True or false: pit bull type dogs rank better than golden retrievers in a temperament test. I was shocked to find out this is actually true. According to the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls ranked above 121 other breeds including the beloved golden retriever. In conclusion pit bull type dogs are some of the most loyal and safe companions to have and they do not deserve the bad reputation they have. I hope I have informed you all enough to work towards breaking down the stereotype and save pit bull type dogs from being wrongfully euthanized....
