Description

Camilla Moya Pre-Lab #5 CHM2211L Synthesis and Characterization of Acetanilide

Purpose: The main purpose of this experiment is to synthesize acetanilide from aniline and acetic anhydride. The following step to this experiment is to purify the acetanilide by recrystallization. This experiment ties in with organic synthesis, purification, and compound characterization.

Summary: Acetanilide is an obsolete analgesic and antipyretic agent which is also known as antifebrin. Acetanilide can be synthesized in numerous ways due to its excessive toxicity and low activity. The acetanilide is soluble in hot water (~5.5g/100 mL) and scarcely soluble in cold (~0.5 g/mL). This property will be purified through the process of recrystallization. One of the most common purification techniques used is recrystallization. In order for this technique to properly work, the purified product must be soluble in hot water and insoluble in cold solvent. The desired product is isolated from its impurities by differences in solubility at various temperatures, soluble impurities remain in the cold solvent after recrystallization. In the case of acetanilide, water will be used....
