2/18/15 Prelab 5 1. What is the purpose of the graduate cylinder? ! The graduated cylinder is used as a way to collect and measure the CO2 gas from the experiment. It is inverted without removing the mouth of the cylinder and then secured with a clamp so that it won’t move and can trap the gas within it.! 2. Why do we add citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to the water? Citric acid and sodium bicarbonate are added to the water to saturate it with CO2 so that when the CO2 is added during the experiment it won’t diffuse into the rest of the solution. 3. What is the acid and base used in this experiment? What is the chemical formula for both? Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is the acid and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the base. 4. What should be added to the water for the second step of this lab (Part B)? Boiling stones should be added to the water bath for safety.
