Matthew Deepe U.S. History Civil War to Present 15 February 2018 President William's McKinley's "Decision on the Philippines" 1. According to McKinley’s speech, why couldn’t the Filipinos rule themselves? According to McKinley's speech, he thought that the Filipinos couldn't rule themselves because they were unfit for self-government. He believed that if they were to be an independent country, they would soon have anarchy and misrule, worse than it was when Spain ruled the land. McKinley felt that it was his personal place to educate the Filipinos, uplift, civilize, Christianize, and do the very best for them that the United States could. He thought he was supposed to do this because Jesus died for their sins like he did for everyone else's. McKinley was afraid that if the United States did not acquire the Philippines, that Germany or Japan might. 2. Why and how did McKinley believe that U.S. rule would benefit the Filipinos? McKinley believed that U.S. rule would benefit the Filipinos because the U.S. would totally uplift them and do the very best for them. His plan to achieve this was to educate, civilize, and Christianize his new citizens. He wanted to extend American values to the Philippines, much like the United States had done with the Native Americans and Hawaiians. However, many of the racist anti-imperialists of the time thought that the Filipinos were inferior to them and not able to assimilate to U.S. values like others had. In his speech, "Decision on the Philippines," McKinley mentions that when Spain ruled over the Filipinos, there was anarchy and misrule. Works Cited
