Description

Process Recording– Foundation Year Recommended for Micro Levels of Practice Individuals, Families, & Groups Student’s name:

Date of interview: September 24, 2020

Client’s name (use initials or first name only): McKyla, P, D, J, X Number of interviews previously held: 0 Presenting problem: I need to develop an understanding about the students I will be working with and how they communicate with each other and their teachers Objective for the interview: Sit in on the students’ Zoom meeting and observe

Content and Dialogue Discussion about the students’ summers Goals for the year Introduce me as the social worker they will be working with this year Casual conversation

Feelings I did not expect the students to be as mature as they seem to be. I forgot how 8th graders are. I was definitely nervous because I did not know how to participate in the conversation. I was excited because it made me want to meet the students even more and develop my own relationships with them. I was intimidated because I could tell that the students have such a strong rapport with my supervisor and the intern that used to work with them, so I feel like I have a lot to live up to.

Assessment/Analysis I need to change the whole belief system that I had about how I would go about working with these students. It is not going to initially be as deep as I thought and wanted it to be. These students are not the children I thought they were going to be, so I am going to have to change my plans for engagement substantially. I am realizing that my best approach to engaging them will be getting to know them casually, easing into the depth of the groups, and learning how to connect with them.

Field Instructor’s Comments

Summary Paragraph Summarize your thinking about the interview you have just recorded. How did you handle the interview? How did the client(s) respond to you? Were your objectives achieved? What will be the focus of your future work? This interaction was not necessarily an interview, but a meeting I sat in on. I observed a Zoom meeting between my supervisor, th

the 8 grade students I will be working with, and one of their teachers. The discussion between them was really casual. My supervisor simply asked them about their summers, asked their goals for the year, and introduced me as her intern that will be working with them throughout the year. The students were not entirely engaged during the meeting as they were at home, most of them in their beds with typical home distractions, with their cameras either off or without showing their faces if their camera was on. I was surprised at how casual and surface level their conversation was. I could tell that the students had a good relationship with my supervisor and that my supervisor knows how to interact with them to keep them engaged to an extent. My supervisor was really great with matching their language and their interests. She knew how to give them a hard time when they made certain comments without discouraging them or hurting their feelings. I was surprised at how maturely the students all carried themselves. I expected them to still have the mindset of children, but to an extent, they spoke like adults with their strong personalities and opinions. This made me realize that I may have a more difficult time getting them to open up and respect me than I initially thought I would. When asked about their goals for the year, most of the students expressed wanting to get out of the PRIDE program, the program that placed them in this group. That was discouraging because I want them to be excited about group and working with me. I was not entirely sure of what my role was supposed to be while sitting in on the Zoom call. I was not sure about how much I should be talking and engaging with the students. I was nervous, honestly. I am not satisfied with how I handled the meeting. I believe that I could have contributed to the conversation more, introduced myself better, and made efforts to get to know the students on my own instead of just listening to the conversation. When I did introduce myself, two of the students were very warm and welcoming and seemingly eager to get to know me, but the others did not seem to have any interest in my presence there.

My objective of observing the students and getting an idea on how they interact with each other and with their teachers was achieved. I did not really have much of an objective aside from that. I now understand that if I want to insert myself into a meeting or interview like this, I will have to show them that I too have a strong personality and that I am somebody they can feel comfortable with talking to. For my future work, I want to figure out how to go about engaging them and developing relationships with them. From this meeting, it has become clear that I will need to develop their trust slowly and I will have to keep the beginning groups casual and lighthearted before I dive into anything deeper. I recognize that they will not open up to just anybody and that it is going to take time for them to learn that I am somebody they can confide in. I plan on doing more research on working with adolescents with behavioral disabilities to further my understanding of what works and what does not.

Agenda for Supervisory Conference Identify concerns, issues, problems, etc., for discussion in your supervisory conference. I did not have many concerns or issues during this meeting aside from the fact that I was a bit shy and nervous to engage in their conversation. The meeting did make me worried about what activities and strategies will engage them and what will not, so I plan on asking my supervisor to give me an abundance of advice on that. I am also worried about being respected by them, as I am younger and a student. I hope that my supervisor can give me advice on demanding and earning respect and how to act as a leader in group environments. While this meeting made me excited for my future work with the students, it also made me very nervous. I was not expecting th

the 8 graders to have the demeanor that they do and expected them to be more childish. With that, the plans I had for activities and engagement strategies may be too young and immature for them. I plan on asking my supervisor to provide me with some information on common themes of behavior that she has seen in 8th grade students over the years. I want to be able to take in as much of her own

perspective on the students as possible so when I begin to develop my own, I can dispel any false illusions I may have about them by comparing our perspectives....
