A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES

PROJECT FIRST TERM READER: A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES SECTION A 1. Find information about the setting-time and place- of the story. Which key events happened at that time in England, particularly in Shrewsbury? Where is the story set? Why do you think the writer chose this time and place? The story was set in the great abbey at Shrewsbury, England and Wales, eight centuries ago. The story begins in the month of May. Shrewsbury in Medieval times was a growing town by the 12 th century it had 2 bridges and King Henry I gave the towns people new rights. The town received grants from the king to build walls around the town and to build a new market place. The reason the walls were built was to defend against the Welsh who attacked twice in the earlier 12th century. I think the author choose this time and place because it was an interesting time of change between England and Wales. The setting is quite dark and the times were difficult for everyone. It makes a murder story more sinister.

2. Name a character, other than the main characters, who is important to the story. Why is the character important? Could the story have been written without this character? Why or why not? Brother Jerome is a follower of Prior Robert. He is important to the story because he is the brother who had a special dream that allowed Prior Robert and the monks to go in search of Winifred. I don’t think this story could have been written without this character because knowledge of Winifred was crucial to the story. Without this character the plot wouldn’t have visited Gwytherin and the murder wouldn’t be the same.

3. Brother Cadfael is a former Crusader who takes holy orders in order to atone for his sins. However, while devoting himself to God he also becomes a master detective at the abbey. Think of another significant fictional detective and compare him or her with Brother Cadfael. Discuss their similarities and differences adding examples to support your views. Another significant fictional detective that I have read books by is Sherlock Holmes. Both Brother Cadfael and Sherlock Holmes are amazing with details. In this story brother Cadfael noticed that the body had dry and wet parts and that the blood came out of his back when the arrow entered his chest. Sherlock Holmes also detects clues that others do not see including the police. People travelled from all parts of the country to request his services for this reason. The differences between them are that Sherlock is a private detective and works for money. Brother Cadfael is a monk and is skilled at solving mysteries. The characters are in different time periods. Sherlock Holmes was set in the 18th century and Brother Cadfael in the 12th century. The similarities and differences in both characters personalities are quite substantial. Both men like to help people; they both feel pity for the victims relations. They both have kind hearts however Sherlock Holmes is a loner, he prefers to work alone, he has no friends apart from Doctor Watson and he has a strange and very arrogant personality. On the other hand, Brother Cadfael works with the victims daughter, he is a sociable man and very humble.
