Joe Ann Davis MAT-150 07/26/20 Prof. Rudilee Gabel Project 1: Lesson Plan-Online ARITHMETIC SERIES AND SEQUENCES Overview: This lesson will help students improve their problem-solving skills. Learning how to find the sum of arithmetic series is a good way to test your mathematical knowledge of the Numeration System. In this lesson, basic techniques, strategies, and formulas will be discussed. The goal is to be able to master solving for sums of arithmetic series. Objectives  Determine whether a sequence/series is arithmetic  Find the sum of an arithmetic sequence  Determining how many terms are in an arithmetic series  Determine the common difference in an arithmetic sequence  Develop an understanding of arithmetic series and sequences  Promote students to become individual thinkers and learners  Encourage students to use other’s viewpoints as a helpful tool  Connect students together to devise approaches  Derive formulas to find the sum using their background knowledge  Use real world problems to help students find a connection, to help their understanding Time: Approximately 75 minutes Materials:  Dry Erase Board  Dry Erase Marker  Time  Group Question (Task Cards – Cut Out)  15 Question ~ Student Worksheet  5 Question ~ Exit Ticket Activity: [5 minutes] Introduction The teacher will introduce the lesson and explain what an arithmetic series/ sequence is.

[10 minutes] Warm Up Discussion The teacher will give an example of a real-life scenario of finding the sum to an arithmetic series. - (2 minutes) Example : “A pyramid of pixie sticks has 2 pixie sticks on the top row, 4 pixie sticks on the second row, 6 pixie sticks on the third row, and so on, there are 200 pixie sticks on the bottom row. - (8 minutes) Discussion: Ask students questions that will let students think critically. Some questions that could be asked are… “How many rows of pixie sticks are there?” or “What are the first 10 terms of this series?” or “What is the common pattern expressed?” or “How many pixie sticks are there total?” [5 minutes] Exercise 1 – Identify Arithmetic Sequences The teacher will write 3 sequences and the student will determine if they are an arithmetic sequence, on a loose-leaf sheet of paper or in their notebook. If they are not an arithmetic sequence they will write “no” and if it is, then they’ll write “yes” and the common difference. 1) 3,5,7,9,11… 2) 4,8,13,19,22… 3) 8,13,18,21,27…

Answers: 1) yes, +3 2) no 3) no

After students are finished, the teacher will discuss answers and reasonings. [20 minutes] Exercise 2 - Note Taking The teacher will write the formula for finding the sum of an arithmetic series on the dry erase board. n an= a1 +(n-1)d sn= ( a1 + an ) 2 Once this sis written, the teacher will deeply discuss what this formula means, while apply it to solve 3 problems (examples). [10 minutes] Exercise 3 – Group Work Students will be placed in a group of 3-5 students each. In this group they will be given 5 problems and will be given 8 minutes to find the sum of all 5 problems. After the timer goes off, the teacher will discuss answers and praise group/groups with the most correct.

[18 minutes] Exercise 4 – Independent Work

Students will be given a worksheet of 10 questions finding the sum of arithmetic series and 5 questions of identifying arithmetic sequences. They will have 15 minutes to complete it. After their time is up, the teacher will collect the worksheet so that it will be graded as a classwork grade. After the collecting is done, answers will be discussed. Arithmetic Series and Sequences Worksheet [7 minutes]

Review & Recap - (2 minutes) Review: The teacher will review the lesson. - (5 minutes) Recap: Students will be given a 5 question Exit Ticket.
