Psalm 23 Analysis In Psalm 23, David glorifies the lord for the abundant blessings he has given him. The God referred to in this psalm is also being compared to a shepherd to a flock of sheep. David compares this God to a shepherd of his flock. By comparing the two we see this God is caring and loving and he protects his flock of sheep. Later on, he explains that he lives in abundance as the Lord has provided for him. In Psalm 23, there are many uses of metaphors and imagery to portray who Jesus Christ is and the great amount of love he has for his children. In the 23rd Psalm, literary devices such as imagery and metaphors are used in order to convey the idea that Jesus Christ is a loving and protecting God. A couple of examples of this idea can be seen in the first two sentences of this poetic piece. Within the first sentence of the Psalm, imagery is created through the vivid wording in which the author uses. This can be seen through the author’s use of phrases such as “he maketh me lie down in green pastures”(line 2) and “he leadeth me beside still waters” (line 2). Both of these lucid phrases clearly convey a peaceful image in the minds of the readers, and because of this, the reader is able to envision the vast love in which the Lord has for his children. The way in which this concept is conveyed is due to the uplifting and peaceful image this vivid word choice displays. We can see that through the Lord's guidance through a secure path, his children are cared for and protected, therefore alluding to who he is and what he stands for. With that being said, this same idea is being demonstrated through the use of metaphors within the first sentence of the Psalm. When the author states, “The Lord is my shepherd” (line 1) a metaphor is created because Christ is being compared to a shepherd. We can see this idea of Christ is a powerful and protecting Lord through the use of this particular metaphor. The reason this metaphor is effective in conveying the idea of

Christ’s loving and protecting nature is that a shepherd watches over his flock and protects them because they are defenseless and the same can be said about Jesus Christ. Overall, through the use of specific phrases that create imagery and metaphors that compare Christ to accurate representations, the concept of the Lord’s loving and preservative essence is conveyed. Moreover, the same concept of Christ’s affection and protection to his children is revealed through the use of imagery and metaphors in the midst of the Psalm. Once again phrases such as “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil” (line 4) convey an image in the minds of the readers. This vivid word choice inflicts a mix of emotions because fear is being conveyed, but the last part of the phrase presented imposes a sense of comfort. With this in mind, the character of Christ is further conveyed through the use of imagery that overall alludes to a feeling of comfort in the midst of a storm. This shows that even during hardships, Christ is there for his children to guide them and lead them on a secure path. On account of this, the character of Christ is revealed, and the reader is able to realize the person in which Christ inflicts. Having said that, there are also metaphors within this specific section of the text that allude to the same concept of Christ’s love and protection for his children. Within the central fragment of Psalm 23 the author writes, “thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies” (line 5). In this metaphoric phrase, Christ is being compared to that of a host. Like the host of any gathering or function, Christ cares for us and takes care of our every need. Through the use of this metaphor, the concept being displayed is more effectively conveyed. Altogether, through the combination of powerful word choice that creates a detailed image in the minds of the readers and precise comparisons that create strong metaphors, Christ’s devoted and safeguarding nature is revealed. The end of the twenty-third Psalm conveys the concept of Christ's protection and

compassion for those who choose to be a part of his kingdom, through the use of metaphoric phrases and detailed word choices that create vivid images in the readers minds. This idea of elaborate imagery can be seen when the author states, “thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over” (line 5).This strong word choice creates an image in the minds of the reader that allude to the idea of abundances. When the author speaks about the cup running over, the readers are able to see that Christ abundantly provides for his children through the envisionment of plentiful provisions. This concept of the Lord providing for his children further supports his caring and protecting nature. Moreover, through the use of metaphors, this concept is revealed as well. This metaphor can be seen when the author states, “and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (line 6). Within this sentence, a metaphor is created to compare heaven to a literal house. Through the use of this particular metaphor as well as the imagery within the same section, the love and protecting nature of Christ is revealed. As you read through the 23 Psalm you start to see the vivid pictures that Christ promises. Christ promises abundant life and overwhelming blessings for the people who follow him. In addition to these promises, Christ also gives protection to his people.. There are many uses of metaphors and imagery that portray who Jesus is and the love he provides for his children....
