PSY-358 – Adult Development and Aging Topic 1 – Development Forces and Successful Aging Survey and Research Directions: In 250-500 words, answer the following questions regarding life-span perspectives and successful aging. You must use three resources; your textbook can be counted as one. Include in-text citations in your responses, with proper APA formatted reference list at the end of the questions. 1. Discuss the major developmental forces (biological, psychological, sociocultural, and life cycle) that influence emerging, middle and late adulthood. Share specific examples for each force, being sure to connect your thoughts directly to research. When it comes to major development forces that influence emerging, middle, or late adulthood, there are many differences. Biological influences that force development would be genetic factors that can affect development in various aspects. For example, when it comes to menopause in women, heart disease, or diabetes. Psychological pressures that force development would be cognitive, personality, and internal factors. For example, when it comes to emotions through their aging years. Once it comes to Sociocultural influences that force development can be how they lived their life. Such as how they grew up, where they grew up, being rich or poor, etc. Lifecycle can be forced to change development by combinations of all the different forces a person lived through. This can impact them on different levels and different ways to live their life, for the good or for the bad (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). 2. Describe the current research methods for studying adult aging. Discuss the main approaches for measuring behavior, including strengths and weaknesses for each. The current research methods for studying adult aging would consist of sampling behaviors with self-reports and tasks, also systematic operations. Starting off with Systematic Observing, we can conclude that this is an observation attentively that pays close attention to a client or individual and records everything and anything they are doing. Two types of observations would be naturalistic and structured. Which Naturalistic occurs when you observe an individual or client in real life spontaneous situations. Structured observation is when the situation you are seeing the client is designed. Self-reporting Sampling is when you have a client or individual that answers questions about topics that you have designed for them. This method is usually not a good method to go with due to the inaccuracy of the answers that are given (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018).

3. Provide a summary of a current research study (within the last 5 years) on the aging adult population and choose a theoretical perspective to explain why the research aligns (or doesn’t) with what the theory claims. What may be some reasons for this? It seems like a lot of research is done with depressed and adults. Valaei did research on depression and sexual roles on the aging population in the beginning of 2016. It was conducted with women and men that were in their mid to late 60s and early 70s. It was collected from different assessments such as questionnaires, sampling individuals in five different countries, with a different variety of ages with adults in different stages in life and situations. “This study classified men and women as: androgynous, masculine, feminine and unidentified (Valaei, et al., 2016).” This study is defiantly multi directional perspective. It states that the people who fitted into society were better in life without depression versus the people who did not fit in were more likely to have depression in life. This is all due to how society and how you react to society as well. Fitting in does not mean you are not comfortable with yourself but being comfortable with yourself does help when it comes to mental illness and health, according to Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018.
