Description

PSYC 1111 Why it is important to explain and predict health-related behaviors. Why it is important to explain and predict health-related behaviors. Psychologists work for improving peoples' lives. Psychologists observe health behavior and predict tendencies. They study whether their observations are accurate or their theories are correct through human health behaviors under controlled variables. So what they say, the right understanding of motives of beliefs make people change health behaviors. I have higher cholesterol levels in my blood than normal people's. A doctor said to me that I have to QUIT smoking and need to do outdoor activities regularly. I think my health behaviors have not been controlled well. Health psychologists have attempted to understand and predict health behaviors by studying health beliefs. (Ogden, 2017). In my case, the belief that smoking will not harm me has caused me to continue to do smoking. In order to understand my health behavior, we need to understand the models of behavior. The Health Belief Model (HBM) predicts that behavior is a result of a set of core beliefs. (Ogden, 2017). HBM is the idea that I will engage in positive health actions in a willing to avoid adverse health outcomes. The HBM has seven fundamental concepts. Those are susceptibility to illness, the severity of the illness, the costs involved in carrying out the behavior, the benefits involved in carrying out the behavior, cues to action, which may be internal or external, perceived control, and health motivation. (Ogden, 2017). According to the HBM, if l "perceive" that I am highly susceptible to hyperlipidemia, hyperlipidemia is a severe health threat, the benefit of the regular preventive action is high, and the cost of quit smoking is comparatively low, I would change my health behavior. (Ogden, 2017). So what they say, the right understanding of those make me change my health behaviors.
