Psychoanalytic therapy is a type of treatment based upon, its founder, Sigmund Freud’s: “theory of personality development, a philosophy of human nature, and a method of psychotherapy that focuses on unconscious factors that motivate behavior” (Corey, G. 2013) Stan experiences extreme anxiety stemming from his past, which antagonizes him to act on his destructive behaviors through the use alcohol. All of these issues combined are very impactful on Stan’s inability to function normally in society. In the case of Stan, the psychoanalytic approach would focus on his self-understanding and the heightening of his past emotional issues and conflicts. This approach focuses on the conscious psychodynamics of Stan’s behavior, what I mean by this is, the treatment will involve breaking down Stan’s childhood experiences and focusing on how it impacted him as a person and how they contribute to his destructive behaviors. Stan openly admits that his childhood experiences drove him into his negative emotions, feelings and behaviors. Stan has a fear of women and is unable to uphold and maintain a relationship. compared to his brother and sister. Stan recalls on his mother saying, “why can’t you grow up and be a man? Things are so much better around here when you’re gone”. Stan added that would cry himself to sleep and felt very alone. These experiences instigated his destructive thoughts of himself and that he will never be good enough. Stan experimented with drugs in high school but then later relied on alcohol to ease and or escape his damaging thoughts. References Corey, G. (2013).
