PROTECT PURDUE Protect Purdue Pledge and Information Surrounding COVID-19 “Being a part of the Boilermaker community means that each of us, accountable together, must take extraordinary steps to stay well and persistently protect each other, on campus and in the local area. I pledge to take responsibility for my own health and the protection of others, and I will help keep the Purdue community safe from spread of COVID-19 and other infections by adhering to university instructions.” The Protect Purdue Plan, which includes the Protect Purdue Pledge above, is campus policy and as such all members of the Purdue community must comply with the required health and safety guidelines. Required behaviors in this class include:      

Staying home and contacting the Protect Purdue Health Center (765-496-INFO) if you feel ill or know you have been exposed to the virus. Properly wearing a mask in all classrooms and campus buildings at all times (this includes a mask that clearly covers nose and mouth and no eating and/or drinking in the classroom). Disinfecting desk/workspace prior to and after use, and avoiding shared use of personal items, including any paperwork or course pack pages. Maintaining appropriate social distancing with peers and the instructor (including when entering/exiting classrooms), and refraining from moving furniture. Maintaining robust hygiene (e.g., handwashing, use of hand sanitizer, disposal of tissues and your personal trash, etc.) prior to, during and after class. Following any and all safety directions from the instructor.

Students who are not engaging in these behaviors (e.g., wearing a mask) will be offered the opportunity to comply. If non-compliance continues, possible results include the instructor asking the student to leave class and the instructor dismissing the whole class. Students who do not comply with the required health behaviors are violating the University Code of Conduct and will be reported to the Dean of Students Office with sanctions ranging from educational requirements to dismissal from the university.

Any student who has substantial reason to believe that another person in our classroom is threatening the safety of others by not wearing a face covering or not following other safety guidelines for public health considerations may leave the room without consequence. The student is encouraged to report the observed behavior to the course instructor or to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, as well as discuss next steps with the instructor. What To Do If You Think You Are Sick Do not come to class if you feel ill, have a fever, display any symptoms associated with COVID-19, or suspect you may have been exposed to the virus. Any student or instructor who has symptoms associated with COVID-19 (outlined on the Protect Purdue Pledge card) must also contact the Protect Purdue Health Center (765-496-INFO). The Health Center will advise what to do. Purdue has returned to pre-pandemic attendance policies, and students are expected to attend class. That being said, you may still need to miss class due to being sick or quarantined. It is VERY important that you inform the instructor of any conflict that can be anticipated and will affect the submission of an assignment or the ability to take an exam. Only the instructor can excuse you from a course requirement or responsibility. When conflicts can be anticipated, you should inform the instructor of the situation as far in advance as possible. For unanticipated or emergency conflicts when advance notification to an instructor is not possible, you should contact the instructor as soon as possible by email, through Brightspace, or by phone. If you are unable to make direct contact with the instructor and are unable to leave word with the instructor’s department because of circumstances beyond your control, you or a representative acting on your behalf should contact the Office of the Dean of Students via email or phone at 765-494-1747. Our course in Brightspace includes a link on Attendance and Grief Absence policies under the University Policies menu. If you become quarantined or isolated at any point in time during the semester, in addition to support from the Protect Purdue Health Center, you will also have access to an Academic Case Manager who can provide you academic support during this time. Your Academic Case Manager can be reached at [email protected] and will provide you with general guidelines/resources around communicating with your instructors, be available for academic support, and offer suggestions for how to be successful when learning remotely. Most importantly, if you find yourself too sick to progress in the course, notify your academic case manager and notify me via email, phone, or Brightspace. We will make arrangements based on your particular situation. The Office of the Dean of Students ([email protected]) is also available to support you should this situation occur. IMPORTANT: Web links to all the Protect Purdue information with more details are available in our Brightspace course in the START HERE section.
