THE LAST LEAF BY O’ HENRY Summary

There are two women named Sue and Johnsy living on top of a building with three floors in Greenwich Village. One day, Johnsy got sick because of pneumonia. She said that when the last leaf falls on the tree on the wall of the house next to hers, she will leave too. Sue goes to Mr. Berhman, the old man who claims that he will paint a masterpiece that he hasn’t started yet. Sue tell Mr. Berhman about Johnsy’s condition and he got angry because who would think that his/her life depends on the last leaf of the tree. Mr. Berhman goes with Sue in the hospital so she could start painting and when she is done, she will sell her paintings to buy Johnsy a food to eat so she will be strong again. After the painting, Sue goes to Johnsy’s room and found her wide awake and Johnsy request to Sue to open the curtain so she can see the last leaf fall. As the days and nights pass by the last leaf on the tree didn’t even fall even

there are strong winds and storms still, it didn’t fall. One morning, Johnsy realized that she had been a bad girl so she decided to eat and be alive and healthy once again, until she got recovered. Sue heard the news that Mr. Behrman got sick of pneumonia and he died because of it, someone see him helplessly lying on the floor and some of his things are wet and cold and they also saw a green and yellow paint.
